Summer lovin’ – the pop-up outdoor cinema set to sizzle this season

Real talk – there are few things more dreamy than a pop-up outdoor cinema. Whether you’re planning a cute date, looking for something fun to do with the fam or chasing an activity to keep all of your mates happy, seeing a flick under the stars is a winner for all occasions. Brisbane is about to be gifted a brand-new player in the pop-up movie theatre game – from Thursday March 15, Sunset Cinema will be landing at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha to screen everything from cult classics to big-name blockbusters for your entertainment.

When it comes to breezy outdoor summer entertainment, it’s hard to go past the Sunset Cinema as your first port of call. The natural amphitheatre of the Botanical Gardens makes for the perfect backdrop to watch the stars under the stars (heh). Commencing with an opening night offering of the critically acclaimed Molly’s Game, the screenings are made up of an irresistible mix of titles to suit even the most discerning film buff. The jam-packed program includes the nail-biting Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Greta Gerwig’s multiple award-winning Lady Bird, Meryl Streep’s latest triumph The Post, plus family-friendly faves like Early Man, The Greatest Showman and Nut Job 2. Those keen on a nostalgia hit are taken care of, with a range of classic flicks like Dirty Dancing and The Breakfast Club on the program. You can choose to bring your own blankets, picnics and beanbags or nab a Lawn Lounge ticket for the VIP treatment.

While the impressive line-up of films is obviously a huge drawcard, Sunset Cinema has some other tricks up its sleeve to make your evening more luxe than a typical night at the movies. The all-important snack situation has levelled up for this event, with a delightful range of light bites and more substantial morsels for those who come hungry. An on-site snack bar stocked with movie favourites like candy, chocolate and (of course) popcorn by Cobs Popcorn will be stocked and ready, while food-truck favourite The Dapper and Chic has curated a special menu for the season including soft shell tacos, burgers, hotdogs and fries. You can wash it all down with ice-cold sips from MadFish Wines, 4 Pines Beer, Preshafruit Juice and Bickford’s Traditional Soda, as well as premium light beer and cider also available.

Ready to take your films al fresco? You can see the whole Sunset Cinema program and buy tickets for sessions through the official website.
