(Beer) paddle your way across the Sunshine Coast’s breweries for the ultimate froth-filled long weekend

In Australia, we don't shy away from the fact that we love a good beer. Over the last few years – much to the delight of fans of froth – we have been treated to an ever-expanding craft-beer scene. The Sunshine Coast is no stranger to this rapidly growing industry, with a tidy 21 craft breweries calling the region home. Not only does this keep locals very well hydrated, but it crowns the Sunshine Coast as the Craft Beer Capital of Australia. Now, 21 breweries are no mean feat, and in the spirit of inclusivity, it's essential to (responsibly) sample a tipple from each.

Luckily for us, the heroes at Visit Sunshine Coast have created a nifty little map showing each brewery’s location so that you can plan the most efficient route that maximises the beer-to-kilometre ratio. Best enjoyed over a long weekend, get ready to sample some of the Sunshine Coast’s best golden drops, saying cheers to local legends as they share the stories behind the beer. With everything from beachside brewers to hinterland hops, the Sunshine Coast craft-beer trail has something for everyone. It even includes a few other craft beverage operators, like the rum gods at CAVU Distilling and Nil Desperandum, and gin genies at Beachtree Distilling Co.

If you’re heading up from Brisbane or the Gold Coast, ask your designated driver to swing by Brouhaha Brewery and Moffat Beach Brewing Co. Brouhaha serves up award-winning beers with a focus on championing local produce in the brewing process. Caloundra local Moffat Beach Brewing Co is also no stranger to awards, claiming the title of Best International Pale Ale and Best Traditional India Pale Ale at the recent 2022 Australian International Beer Awards. Keep heading north through Warana and you can swing by Your Mates Brewing Co (an ice-cold Larry is always a good time) before rounding out your first day of froth-filled adventures at Blackflag Brewing in Mooloolaba and Ten Toes Brewery in Alexandra Headland. We recommend pulling up stops for the night at Oceans Mooloolaba, where you can relax with a beachside brewski.

Depending on how long you have to explore, day two can either take you on an adventure up north towards Noosaville and even Boreen Point, or west towards Nambour, Montville and Maleny. The northern route offers the likes of Terella Brewing, a brand steadfast on sustainably producing only what they need to minimise waste. You can also pop into the Eumundi Brewery for a refreshing lager, Land & Sea for a First Point Pale Ale, Copperhead Brewery for some lunch and one of their seven very sessionable beers, and, for those needing a little break from booze, swing by Heads of Noosa for an alcohol-, sugar- and gluten-free hop seltzer. Northern sippers are encouraged to spend their second night at HOLA in Eumundi, a brand-new space conveniently located right next to Eumundi Distillers. Those more inclined to head for the hinterland’s hills can sip their way through Sunshine Brewery in Kuluin for a mango IPA, Glass House Brewery in Forest Glen for a raspberry sour and some freshly made pizza, and Morts Brewing Co in Nambour. From here, you can scoot over for a night at Scandi at Maleny, an adult-only eco-minded cabin nestled in the hinterland.

It’s important to note that this is but a glimpse into the many schooner-slinging establishments on the Sunny Coast. We recommend gathering a crew and charting a course over a weekend or two so that you can taste your way through some of the best craft beer Queensland has to offer. Cheers!
