Keeping it street (food) – hip-hop and dumplings combine to stimulate your soul

Keeping it street (food) – hip-hop and dumplings combine to stimulate your soul

Look, it’s common knowledge that both the Sydney and Brisbane nightlife scenes are copping a bit of a reputation as DOA – but this isn’t necessarily the case. Granted, there are some pretty silly laws in place at the moment, but our respective live music scenes are doing everything they can to keep the dream alive. One of the best ways to prove that we can still party is by throwing a party, and what better things to celebrate than music and food? On Thursday March 22, the legends at Stimulate your Soul will be taking it to the streets at Heya Bar for a night filled with two of the things closest to our hearts – dumplings and hip-hop.

In case you’re not familiar, Stimulate Your Soul is a rad music blog dedicated to spreading the word of all things hip-hop – and its celebrating seven years of success with a little party. Founder Maggie Tra created the blog in response to feeling like there was a lack of support for the hip-hop scene in Australia – so she took matters into her own hands. In a musical landscape that is constantly evolving, Stimulate Your Soul has remained a touchstone and support network for the Aussie hip-hop community. The blog decided to mark its seventh birthday – while also proving that the Brisbane and Sydney hip-hop scenes are thriving – by fusing a love of music and street food into one huge party.

The premise of a night filled with dumplings and hip-hop is pretty self-explanatory, so let’s get stuck into some of the finer details. The kitchen at Heya Bar will be pumping out street-food style dumplings all night long, so be sure to come hungry. The entertainment portion of the evening is set to be red-hot, involving live DJs that live and breathe all things hip-hop, soul and RnB. Opening up the evening is SYS’s very own Maggie Tra, playing her debut set packed with tunes to get you in the groove. Next up is Byron Bay duo OutlieRs, made up of DJ/producer Jayo and Deadly MC – expect funk, hip-hop, reggae beats and rhymes. Closing the night is Belgium’s premier hypnotic selector Kreshik, making a detour from his tour of Asia to drop some hip-hop, funk, afrobeat and house music.

Ready to get low (and also full)? Entry to the SYS dumplings and hip-hop party is totally free, so come along and stimulate your soul for the night.
