GOMA celebrates sleuthing on screen with The Great Detective film program

More than a century after Sherlock Holmes first uttered the phrase ‘the game is afoot’, detective films – and the iconic characters they create – continue to delight and surprise cinemagoers. If you're a fan of the 'whodunit' genre, get excited because from July 6 to September 2, the Australian Cinémathèque at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) is celebrating sleuthhounds on screen with The Great Detective film showcase.

Ready the popcorn and clear your calendar because The Great Detective is dishing up a jam-packed program featuring more than 40 films, from the silent era through to present day. Delve into the curious and complex world of investigation and connect the dots with some of cinema’s greatest private eyes including unforgettable characters such as Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot.

The program officially launches on July 6 with the 1974 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, featuring an all-star cast led by Albert Finney as Detective Poirot, who will also grace the screen in Death on the Nile and Evil Under the Sun. Headlining the Hitchcock chapter is the suspenseful The Lady Vanishes, Rear Window and Vertigo alongside the Hitchcockian classic Charade from 1963. Clint Eastwood fans will love Mystic River and for serious film buffs, there will be two special screenings of silent films Sherlock Holmes from 1916 and Sherlock Jr. from 1924 that will feature live musical accompaniment by David Bailey on the Gallery’s rare Wurlitzer style 260 organ. Tickets to The Great Detective are on sale now.
