Boasting a line-up of accomplished danseurs and brilliant ballerinas from The Australian Ballet, The Happy Prince is brought to life through transformative storytelling and breathtaking ballet choreographed by acclaimed dance and drama visionary Graeme Murphy. Graeme, who previously reimagined story ballets such as The Nutcracker – The Story of Clara and Swan Lake, brings stylistic innovation, signature wit and a few homegrown elements to the production. The ballet also features a specially commissioned score from renowned composer Christopher Gordon, who composed the scores for films such as Mao’s Last Dancer and Master and Commander, alongside the work of award-winning artist and director Kim Carpenter, who has created a vibrant set and costume designs that will animate the world of The Happy Prince.
A tale of generosity, love and friendship, The Happy Prince is the story of a shining golden statue who stands high on a hill, watching helplessly over the disadvantaged people of the city below. A swallow stops to rest at the kind statue’s feet on his way south for the winter, then delays his journey to help deliver precious jewels and gold leaf from the statue’s own body to the needy villagers. Balletomanes will be treated to the very special talent of The Australian Ballet’s tip-toeing talent as they kick off their first performance of the decade as part of its Year of Limitless Possibilities season.
