GOMA combines interactive exhibition with virtual events at The Motorcycle: Design, Art, Desire

Livestreamed talks, interactive experiences and a striking visual display will tickle the senses and pique curiosity at GOMA’s upcoming summer exhibition, The Motorcycle: Design, Art, Desire. The gallery’s ground floor will be awash with motorcycles while an innovative program of (COVID-safe) virtual events will douse you in knowledge.

Whether or not you’re entering GOMA’s world-exclusive exhibition The Motorcycle: Design, Art, Desire with an interest in the speedy beasts, it’s likely you will leave with a newfound obsession. The object of many an infatuation, motorcycles will step into the spotlight in this major exhibition running from November 28, 2020 to April 26, 2021. The beauty, creativity and sheer audacity of these machines will be studied and celebrated via a series of talks, lectures, workshops, movies, interactive experiences, trivia nights, outdoor festivals and storytelling events.

Visit the ground floor of GOMA to ogle more than 100 of the greatest motorcycles ever assembled, from the first steam-powered velocipede and oldest known motorcycle in the world, to the earliest Australian-designed and built machines, right through to the electric bikes of the renewable energy age. Take a virtual seat on a 1950s Vespa, 1960s dirt bike or electric ‘future’ bike, or build and customise your own bike with a fun touch-screen interactive. Motorcycles on Screen will take a look at more than a century of bikes on film, while Full Face: Artists’ Helmets will explore contemporary Australian artists’ efforts to individualise the quintessential riding accessory.

Virtual events will form a significant portion of the exhibition, from discussions about the art of motorcycle design and a trivia night, to an investigation into the cool factor of bikes. But if you’re hankering after some face-to-face time with the beasts, head to Outdoor Festival: Motorcycles on The Green on February 27, 2021 to admire machines from the Historic Motorcycle Club of Queensland and see a live custom build at the Ellaspede pop-up workshop. Alternatively, listen to true tales of adventure and freedom at The Motorcycle: Storytelling Night on April 21, 2021.
