Knock your ridiculous yellow stockings off as Twelfth Night hits the Playhouse

Knock your ridiculous yellow stockings off as Twelfth Night hits the Playhouse

Mischief making and cross dressing? Sounds like a classic Shakespearean comedy to us! Follow the twisted tale of mistaken identities, separated twins and, of course, a love triangle that can still bring the laughs after 400 years. Shakespeare’s most notorious comedy Twelfth Night is taking over QPAC's Playhouse from April 28 to May 19 – and it’s bringing a musical twist.

Famous for being Shakespeare’s most musical play, producer Tim Finn (of Ladies in Black, Split Enz and Crowded House fame) has taken this to the next level curating fresh tunes for the Queensland Theatre’s take on the traditional play. For three weeks, the Playhouse theatre will be transformed into the mystical land of Shakespeare’s Illyria. The live band will take the play to new heights, running parallel to the whimsical tale that is set to transfix audiences. Tim’s original score, paired with the extraordinary talents of the band, enhance the mischievous characters, whilst highlighting the heartbreaking reality the play presents.

Directed by Sam Strong Twelfth Night stars a stellar line-up of well-known faces, including Jessica Tovey, Liz Buchanan, Christen O’Leary and Kurt Phelan, bringing Shakespeare’s famously comical and timeless characters to life. The story focuses on the young Viola (Jessica Tovey) who finds herself separated from her twin brother Sebastian (Kevin Spink) after becoming stranded on an exotic island – and what better way to face this problem than to disguise herself as a man? The witty tale sees the challenges the newly disguised Viola faces as she becomes entangled in a web of amorous pursuits gone awry, and the fight she faces to keep her cover.
