Delve into classic cinema with ACMI’s weekly movie program Virtual Cinémathèque

The joy of seeing a movie in a crowded cinema will not be felt for a little while, but that doesn't mean the cinema experience is no more. After not-for-profit film society, The Melbourne Cinémathèque had to cancel its weekly film program, the team knew that they wanted to keep the spirit of cinema alive. To make this happen, they teamed up with Australia’s national museum of all things creative, The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) to establish a dedicated weekly movie night that will be streamed right to your living room. Grab the microwave popcorn, nab yourself a blanket and get ready to watch some flicks – ACMI's Virtual Cinémathèque kicks off on Wednesday March 25.

Set to keep you entertained while connected with your fellow cinephiles, Virtual Cinémathèque will see a weekly roster of double-bill features that will continue to showcase a range classic and contemporary films based around specific directors, performers or thematics. Every Tuesday, ACMI will release details of its weekly Virtual Cinémathèque on its Facebook and Instagram pages with a screening to occur every Wednesday night on free-to-view platforms. As usual, the films will be chosen by the movie lovers of the Melbourne Cinémathèque Committee and ACMI’s crackerjack film department and (where possible) will feature accompanying annotations and introductions for screenings.

Those who want to recreate the communal experience of film watching can join their film fanatic mates using Metastream, a free streaming program that allows you to invite your friends to watch at the same time. Those participating in the screening are also encouraged to join in the conversation using the hashtag #acmivirtualcteq, to help continue the important conversations around cinema and discuss “the bigger picture”. Virtual Cinémathèque will kick off on Wednesday March 25 on SBS On Demand, with a double feature screening of Iranian director Jafar Panahi’s sublime works The White Balloon and Offside. To stay up to date with weekly film selections and where to watch, follow ACMI on Facebook and Instagram or check out Melbourne Cinémathèque’s Facebook.
