See Tim Rogers’ iconic album What Rhymes With Cars and Girls get the stage treatment

There are certain people who quite simply have a way with words – when they have something to say, we pay attention. One of these people is Tim Rogers, a bona fide Australian arts legend. Perhaps best known as the frontman for rock and roll outfit You Am I, Tim’s prolific career has spanned to include solo albums, books and now a stage production. The celebrated raconteur has teamed up with the Melbourne Theatre Company to bring us What Rhymes With Cars and Girls, coming to the Brisbane Powerhouse from October 25 to November 4 to hit us hard with feelings.

Premiering with the Melbourne Theatre Company back in 2015, Brisbane audiences are being treated to a season of What Rhymes With Cars and Girls for the very first time. If you haven’t listened to the album (do yourself a favour and rectify that immediately if you can), the lyrical themes of a complex romance have been expertly crafted into an intimate show that sees two lovers brought together by the dual magic of fate and a pizza delivery gone awry. The feel-good venture retains Tim’s trademark honesty and rawness, but still manages to create a soothing spectacle loaded with hope.

The cast and creative of What Rhymes With Cars and Girls is a huge part of its success, drawing upon the talents of Tim himself as well as playwright Aidan Fennessy to adapt the story of the album for the stage. The acting and singing talents of leads Sophie Ross and Johnny Carr mean that the beloved source material is in more than capable hands, with Tim forming part of the house band to really tie the production together. It’s all going down under the watchful eye of Black Swan State Theatre’s head honcho Clare Watson, bringing her signature finesse to the directorial role.

You can pick up tickets to What Rhymes With Cars and Girls through Brisbane Powerhouse – be prepared to swoon.
