Brisbane City Council’s Indigenous Art Program

Elsewhere

Established in 2016, the Indigenous Art Program is a spectacular showcase of some of the most celebrated and widely recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, bringing their stories to life outside in city streets, instead of inside on gallery walls. Until Monday October 2, Brisbane City Council’s Outdoor Gallery exhibition Reflections: a reflection of Brisbane’s waterways will see various streets and laneways of Brisbane transform into imaginative, curious and engaging spaces comprising of large-scale banners, light boxes, vitrines and projections. The collection of pieces highlights the Brisbane River’s beauty, sustainability and significance to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders that call our city home. The spectacular line-up of established and emerging artists includes Tai Bobongie, Taliah Saylor, Lewis James Bin Doraho, Luke Mallie, Kylie Hill, Nicole Williams, Dean Tyson, Ben Barker, Brett Leavy and Paula Dewis.

As you wander the streets of our beloved city, you’re invited to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Australia’s First Nations people, not just through the visual art on display, but through a series of artist-led workshops, talks and walking tours with the curators. This year’s program is full of free activities that will see participants learn weaving techniques from local weavers, take night visits to Howard Smith Wharves, partake in an interactive drawing workshop with acclaimed artist Dean Tyson, experience Brisbane prior to first settlement through virtual reality activation with Brett Leavy from Bilbie XR Labs, and much more.

Indigenous Art Program is presented by Brisbane City Council. To learn more about the program, head to the Brisbane City Council website.
