Cross from west to east, from concert hall to theatre, on a mysterious, cultural and spiritual journey.

The ‘medieval world folk’ ensemble, La Camera delle Lacrime, joins the Brandenburg in a performance that follows one man’s quest to convert the Great Khan to Christianity in the Mongol capital, Karakorum. The man was William of Rubruck, and this theatrical musical voyage is based on his manuscript and itinerarium.

Be transported back to the 13th Century on an expansive musical journey, exploring Christian, Islamic and Eurasian worlds. A small Brandenburg Choir joins La Camera delle Lacrime, who perform on an eclectic range of rare instruments, for a moving performance of forgotten hymns, melodies and chants, featuring narration by legendary Australian actor David Wenham, for one-night only on Tuesday August 7 in QPAC’s Concert Hall.

Karakorum reimagines the music encountered by 13th-century Flemish monk William of Rubruck on his epic Silk Road journey from Constantinople to Karakorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol empire, through the endless mountains and steppes of Eurasia, just 20 years earlier than the journey of Marco Polo.

For this musical journey from west to east, La Camera delle Lacrime will perform on an array of rare and ancient instruments, including the erhu (a Chinese two stringed fiddle), kamanche (an Iranian bowed string instrument), cornasmuse (a double reed instrument dating from the Renaissance period) and a vielle à roue (a French hurdy gurdy).

Karakorum: A Musical Journey will evoke each of the remote locations on William of Rubruck’s vast trip. Cross from west to east, from concert hall to theatre – on a mysterious, cultural, and spiritual journey.
