What does it mean to live in a world of simultaneous brilliance and opportunity? Vertigo and disquiet? Sugar Spin: you, me, art and everything will explore this concept, showcasing large scale visitor favourites and major new commissions across GOMA in celebration of the gallery’s tenth birthday.
Every delight that Sugar Spin offers also has an edge – the complex connections between humanity and the natural world are celebrated and looked at in a new light. The exhibit draws audiences between distinctive chapters – sweet-melt, white out, blackwater, soaring, garden and cosmos – establishing a dramatic visual journey through the gallery’s spaces. It’s a double dose of reflecting the urgent challenges of our day, as well as the beauty of the world we live in.
Featuring more than 200 contemporary artworks exploring light, space, architecture and the senses, Sugar Spin reflects our complex connections to the natural world with an explosion of colour, sensation and dizzying delights. Highlights include Carsten Höller’s much-loved Left/Right Slide that will spiral participants from the top to the bottom of GOMA, Ron Mueck’s oversized woman In bed, Olafur Eliasson’s interactive installation of thousands of white Lego pieces The cubic structural evolution project, Kohei Nawa’s bubble encrusted Pix-cell Double Deer#4 and Céleste Boursier-Mougenot’s musical installation of live finches, from here to ear (v.13).
