Festival of Contemporary Dance is back in 2019 with a jam-packed program celebrating bodies in motion. From 30 March – 7 April 2019 at Brisbane Powerhouse and city surrounds, Supercell presents a stellar line-up of internationally-acclaimed artists using contemporary dance to spark critical dialogue and social change.

This is a square, a stage, a world, a life. Space is getting tighter and time is getting shorter. In Split, the dancers Melanie Lane and Lilian Steiner, one clothed and one naked, are framed by ever-diminishing dimensions of space and time with escalating intensity, reveling in Lucy Guerin’s sharp, elegant choreography. Split received a prestigious Helpmann Award for Best Dancer (Lilian Steiner) and four Green Room Awards among other nominations.

An evening of short works from three of Hong Kong’s acclaimed independent dance artists. Unpacking 21st century themes of urbanisation, censorship and transcultural communication, this triple bill is a snapshot into hot topics from this global new-world city. Jupiter Orbiting is an immersive exploration of personal identity through a science fiction narrative. Supercell proudly presents the 2019 Independent Dance Exchange, or as it’s more fondly known, INDEX. A series of short performative showings, INDEX profiles three Queensland indie dance artists with robust ideas and developing works. This fundamental festival offering provides a platform for home grown artists to work on new material, and, seek input from peers and audience members into the ongoing creation and construction of their work. Each INDEX showing includes a post-performance Q&A facilitated by a Supercell guest artist.

Angel-monster is a contemporary dance installation created by Phluxus2 Dance Collective. As a vehicle for confession and protest, the work reveals experiences of what it is to be female in the face of juxtaposing campaigns such as the #idontneedfeminismbecause and #metoo. Driven from personal narratives, angel-monster is a contribution to the important social commentary around gender equality and the growing public stand against predators. Phluxus2 Dance Collective is an award-winning Brisbane company known for creating boundary bashing contemporary work. Angel-monster is their latest creation set to tour in 2019. Presented by Supercell Festival of Contemporary Dance and Phluxus2 Dance Collective.
