Boogie spots, bangin’ bites and boutiques galore – our ultimate guide to Bakery Lane

In the heart of Fortitude Valley lies Bakery Lane, a laneway lined with boutiques full of goodies, charming caffeine dispensaries and delicious eateries. If it has been a hot minute since you ventured down this heritage-listed hub, we've rounded up our pick of the best spots to hit up – whether you're seeking whistle-wetting libations, flavoursome fare or somewhere to have a boogie.

Daytime delights
Before you pop inside Bakery Lane, make sure to stop by Ann Street favourite The New Black for a mouth-watering brunch experience. Picky eaters can build their own breakfast, combining the likes of sourdough bread, eggs your way and sides such as avocado, haloumi, bacon and mushrooms. Those feeling more adventurous can match a caffeinated brew with winning dishes like red-velvet waffles, chorizo burgers and salmon-topped bagels. Just moments away is NUG. General Store, a concept pairing nourishing grab-and-go eats with quality pantry fillers and eye-catching homewares. Hungry folk can pick up deli heroes like lamb and capsicum sandwiches, chicken katsu sandos, gluten-free pasta salad with Mediterranean-style marinated vegetables and crumpets with blueberry and ricotta jam. Homewares lovers can get their fix too with small collections of decorative pieces, ceramics, tableware and glassware on display. If you’re shopping for something for your big day, we suggest popping in to Bessette, which offers a luxury bridal gown rental service. The boutique offers seasonal collections of gowns from acclaimed international designers – Givenchy, Vera Wang, Christian Dior, Ralph Lauren, Caroline Herrera and more – in a host of sizes. It’s as easy as booking a fitting appointment, picking up the dress before the wedding and returning it afterwards – Bessette will even take care of the cleaning!

Fantastic feeds
Bakery Lane is dotted with some of Brisbane’s best restaurants, so we think it’s time to embark on a culinary adventure. Kick off your feasting with a bucket-list-worthy dinner at Joy., which boasts an array of flavoursome fare with distinct Japanese and Nordic influences, made with local Australian ingredients and Scandinavian techniques. The offering is designed to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, with the impressive and ever-changing set menu available to only ten diners at a time. For a treasure trove of Japanese eats, pull up a chair at Gung Ho! Dumpling and Ramen Bar, an unassuming snack spot that specialises in two things – handmade dumplings and bowls of rich, hearty ramen. Those fond of splitting a few serves of gyoza with the gang can tuck into serves of fried or poached parcels of deliciousness – we’re talking pork and black fungi, pork and chives, prawn, pork and bamboo shoot, and vegan-friendly tofu – before moving on to slurp-worthy serves of ramen. Just footsteps away is where you’ll find Jeon’s, a Korean food dispensary that plates up dishes like stir-fry noodles with crispy chicken, teriyaki salmon with chickpea rice, and salad topped with bulgogi beef.

Late-night revelry
Bakery Lane is located in The Valley, so it’s only natural that the precinct boasts a bounty of the area’s most beloved bars and go-to late-night spots. Blurring the lines between bar, nightclub and function venue, iconic tipple temple Laruche is the perfect setting to kick off your weekend. Looking to groove to some live music with a margarita in hand? Hawaiian-inspired dive bar Suzie Wong’s Good Time Bar is your gal! Five nights a week, you’ll find a band on stage getting the party started, with rock’n’roll, blues, funk tunes and more filling the air. Those searching high and low for a decent feed after 10:00 pm can pop in to pizza and pasta parlour Uh Oh’s, which is helping keep energy levels high with its newly minted late-night trading menu. Uh Oh is now open until 2:00 am on Friday and Saturday nights, with DJs playing hits and half-price pizzas keeping the vibes on point until the early hours. See you on the dance floor!
