Barbecue Mafia sets down roots with Chelmer restaurant

Like any restaurant with a little experience under its belt, there comes a time when even a pop-up seeks to settle down. After dozens of sell out appearances across town, American-style barbecue purveyor Barbecue Mafia has brought its signature slow and smoky flavours to a permanent restaurant in Chelmer.

It was a passion for the grunge of American-style barbecue that first inspired co-founder Gareth Dosser to start Barbeque Mafia, so it makes perfect sense that they’ve chosen an equally down-to-earth location to open their first permanent residence: Western Magpies Football Club in Chelmer. Set up alongside the club’s footy field, Barbecue Mafia is taking full advantage of its new and improved space. Inside you’ll find a licensed bar and a kitchen equipped with two custom-built Radar Hill Smokers affectionately named ‘The Don’ and ‘The Bone Collector’ — the machines responsible for creating Barbecue Mafia’s authentic pit smoked flavour. Outside, long wooden tables and benches perch under strings of lights in a setting reminiscent of a southern backyard barbecue.

A new location is not the only fresh addition to Barbecue Mafia’s offering — weekly specials will now appear on the menu alongside beloved staple dishes. Diners can expect a selection of beef ribs, pork ribs, pastrami and chicken paired with southern-style sides like Texas Toast, shoestring fries and Mafia Secret Southern Slaw. If so inclined, patrons can also take the taste of Barbecue Mafia home with them in the form of a signature sauce — Mobster BBQ Sauce being the pick of a delicious bunch.

Barbecue Mafia is now open! For opening hours and other tasty details, head to the Stumble Guide.
