Brisbane Brewing Co turns on the taps in West End

Starting their brewhouse in 2005, and most recently taking over the iconic Clarence Corner Hotel in Woolloongabba, Grant and Michelle Clark have found a permanent home for their brewery, opening Brisbane Brewing Co in West End.

Strolling along Boundary Street, you may have noticed some intricate wrought-iron gates guarding the pathway that runs behind Charlie and Liz’s Family Fruit Market. What was once an unassuming driveway and loading bay has been transformed into West End’s newest drinking den, and the new home to boutique brewer Brisbane Brewing Co. The space’s pièce de résistance is its open brewery, boasting eight fermenters. Master brewer Simeon Bonetti oversees the 1000-litre small batches of each brew, ranging from the Brisbane Pale Ale and Star Lager Classic Pilsner, to the more creative Lady Marmalade Apricot Amber Ale and Smoking Gun Robust Porter. Daytime from Monday to Thursday is dedicated to brewing, with the venue closed to the public those days until 4:00 pm. The bar has ten beers on tap at any one time (mainly Brisbane Brewing Co’s own beers, but rotating through a variety of local guest beers), as well as one hand pump. Those looking to kick on at home can top up a takeaway growler from the designated filling station at the bar. To help you figure out where to go, local signwriters Frank + Mimi have gone to work on the walls, hand painting the signs and illustrations dotted around the venue.

But Brisbane Brewing Co is much more than just a brewery and bar. Brothers Dan and Tim Searle are at the kitchen’s helm, offering up a carefully curated menu to pair with your icy-cold brew. The restaurant has a continental diner-style menu, with a focus on fresh, local and ethically sourced produce. Growing up with a seafood chef mother and pizza chef father, Dan and Tim were constantly around old-style cooking, techniques of which they passionately use to prepare the Brisbane Brewing Co dishes. Taking influences from America, Germany and classic British and Australian pub fare, the boys have devised a broad menu to select from. If you’re feeling peckish, look to the breads, hoagies and tapas-style tasters on offer, or share in a platter for two such as the Deli Platter, including a variety of cold meats, cheese, ale-marinated olives, house-smoked semi-dried tomatoes and pickled beetroot; or the Brewer’s Platter with slow-cooked Darling Downs beef brisket, pulled pork shoulder, potato and bacon salad and house-made beer mustard. If the deli counter takes your fancy, you can also select from the variety of meats, cheese and deli goods to take home along with your filled growler. Those looking for a heartier feast can opt for mains of twice-cooked duck leg or vegetarian Chili Non Carne, with a choice of two salads or hot sides. While Dan and Tim make many of their items in-house, local producers are aplenty – Woolloongabba’s Heinz Meats provides a variety of smallgoods, cheeses hail from the Sunshine Coast, as do the Mooloolaba prawns – and they are constantly on the lookout for more to add to their list of suppliers.
