If you haven't been to Coles, Woolworths or Aldi lately, then you might not be aware of the state our supermarkets are in. Across Brisbane, barren shelves are depleted of pasta, rice, meat and tinned food, leaving our dinner plans in the lurch. Thankfully there is an alternative for those looking to stock up on important consumables – here is a list of Brisbane's supermarket alternatives (delis, butchers, bulk-food stores and international grocers) that still have plenty of foodstuffs available.


Hanaro Mart, various locations: One of the biggest Asian grocery chains in Queensland, Hanaro Mart is a reliable spot to pick up an assortment of goodies, from imported snack foods and beverages to fresh produce and freezable meals.

Market Organics, various locations: If you’re after fresh, certified-organic fruits and vegetables, meat, eggs, dairy, bulk goods, long-life milks, sauces, pastas and more, Market Organics is fully stocked with everything you need. The grocer has also partnered with HomeFresh Organics to offer a comprehensive home-delivery service for those that can’t get out of the house to shop.

Rosalie Gourmet Market, Rosalie: This gourmet grocer and cafe is renowned for providing everything from Australian cheese, freshly made artisan breads and patisserie items to cured meats and charcuterie, fresh fruit and vegetables, locally grown and imported flowers, and take-home meals. Fundies, Paddington: Fundies Wholefood Market is a go-to destination for natural and organic foods – you know, the nutritious kind that comes without artificial additives, sweeteners, colourings and preservatives. Fundies has got you covered with fresh fruit and vegetables, wholefoods, vitamins to help boost your immune system and much more.

Monika Indian Groceries, Fortitude Valley: Monika Indian Groceries is a stockist of authentic spices, food and cultural items from a range of countries. The shelves are lined with vibrant displays of spices, flour, rice, lentils, beans, nuts and bread, beckoning you to take them home and whip up a flavoursome feast.

Flannery’s Organic and Wholefood Market, Chermside: One of the country’s best organic health-food stores and wholefoods market, Flannery’s is stocked with plenty of certified-organic fruit and vegetables, gluten-free pastas, breads and crackers, as well as plenty of vegan options.

Swiss Gourmet Delicatessen, West End: Although the dine-in tables have been packed away, Swiss Gourmet Delicatessen is still serving its famed array of gourmet meats, cheeses, groceries and takeaway meals.

The Source Bulk Foods, various locations: This specialised bulk-food retailer has got an impressive selection of ingredients perfectly suited for nourishing home-cooked dishes and guilt-free snacking. Dried fruit, flour, nuts, oils, pasta, rice, seeds, beans, cereals and coffee comprise less than half of The Source’s massive selection.

Plenty Continental Deli, Eight Mile Plains: If you’ve got a carb craving but your local has run out of pasta, then make tracks to Plenty in Eight Mile Plains. Here you’ll be able to find an abundance of gourmet pasta and rice, not to mention a great selection of sauces to liven up your meal.

Genki Mart, Tarrgindi and Alderley: If you’ve ever toyed around with the idea of introducing more Japanese flavours into your home-cooking, now is the perfect time. Genki Mart is stocked with the largest range of Japanese groceries and, if you’re looking to tick two tasks of your list, also stocks Japanese-produced sake and beer.

Meat at Billy’s, Ashgrove and Rosalie: One of the top butchers is town is doing its best to keep locals provisioned with quality meats and ready-to-cook dishes. Both stores have implemented some new restrictions in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, including reducing the number of customers in each store to four and two in Ashgrove and Rosalie respectively.

Ruski Way Deli, Woolloongabba: Over on the south side, Ruski Way Deli is stocked floor to ceiling with gourmet Eastern European foodstuffs, including breads, pierogis, jams and preserves, condiments, vegetables, pickled goods, kosher items, sweets and more. Ruski Way Deli is currently imposing a maximum capacity of three customers in the store at any time, but is remaining open for the time being.

Neighbourhood Market Co., Everton Park: Everton Plaza’s own gourmet fruit and veg shop is still operating throughout the coronavirus outbreak, sourcing market-fresh produce and other smallgoods for patrons to fill their fridge, freezer and pantry with.

Mirchh Masala Bazaar, Woolloongabba: Although the upstairs restaurant may be closed for dine-in service, Mirchh Masala’s grocer component is still stocked with plenty of Indian, Pakistani, Desi and Nepalese groceries.

Hawthorne Garage, Hawthorne: Always a reliable source of pantry essentials, Hawthorne Garage might be a better grocery option until local supermarkets return to normalcy. Grab your shopping list and pop on over for local and international produce, fresh fruit and vegetables, and specialty items such as the vegan, organic, gluten-free, and healthy lifestyle products.

The Bardon Shed, Bardon: Although The Bardon Shed’s cafe menu is now only available to take away, its retail component is still selling plenty of fresh produce, meat, dairy, bread, deli goods and takeaway coffee.

Naked Foods, various locations: In addition to improving our attentiveness to hygiene, the current pandemic is a great excuse to overhaul our diets. Naked Foods is a great resource for those looking to eat clean and healthy, and its stores are currently stocked with everything from nuts, dried fruits and spreads to snacks, oils and dressings, and a range of superfoods.

Wray Organic, Cannon Hill: This family-run organic cafe and market is still open! Those looking for an alternative shopping destination for fresh produce, pantry items and nourishing cafe eats (served takeaway), should pencil in a visit to Wray Organic.

Angelo’s Pasta, Fortitude Valley: For now, Angelo’s long-running Doggett Street factory store and deli is continuing to trade in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, stocked with its signature range of pasta, Cirio diced tomatoes, peeled tomatoes and passata, as well as pesto, antipasto items and pre-prepared meals.

The Fruit & Deli Co., North Lakes: If you’re looking for a reliable spot to get fruit and veg, The Fruit & Deli Co. is a handy grocer in Brisbane’s north. The hub is also accepting email orders through its home delivery and click-and-collect orders.

The Stores Grocer, West End: Since its inception, The Stores has been a reliable go-to grocer for anyone seeking top-quality goods. That hasn’t changed – this hub is still chock-full of mouth-watering food, including fresh produce, gourmet butcher meats, local seafood, deli bites, cheeses and pantry provisions.

Clayfield Markets Fresh, Clayfield: Local grocers are picking up the slack of the larger supermarkets, and Clayfield Markets are keeping its shelves stocked with all sorts of market-fresh produce. Carseldine Quality Meats, Carseldine: Northsiders seeking quality cuts need look no further than this beloved local gem. Carseldine Quality Meats stocks a huge range of the freshest meat, and is open to the public seven days a week.

Rock’n’Roll Marketplace, Greenslopes: Talk about an all-in-one option! This ripper little hub has everything you need in one spot – fresh fruit and veggies, pantry staples like pasta and flour, bakery goods, deli treats and so much more. They have even started offering a delivery service for locals – you can find more information on Facebook.

The Pantry on Grey, South Bank: This super-stocked providore at Southpoint has everything you need to make your time in self-isolation just that little bit more delicious. You can stock your own pantry with the likes of fresh produce, cured meats, sauces, gourmet cheeses, boutique snack food and loads more, with the added bonus that the business has a predominantly Australian focus.
