Sunset cruises, rooftop bars and beer yoga – why Brisbane winters are the best

Every year when winter arrives, us Queenslanders have been known to complain of feeling freezing when the thermometer drops below 20 degrees. We know, however, that we're pretty lucky here, as winter (if you can even call it that) in Brisbane is actually the perfect climate for fun. The sunshine-filled weather isn’t the only incentive you need to explore Brisbane at the moment, with breathtaking destinations, entertainment aplenty and a plethora of alfresco dining destinations and bars just waiting to welcome you back – with some stellar deals to boot. If you're keen to find out why Brisbane is the best place to bounce around in winter, read on to discover all of the things you can do, places to go and where to eat and drink in our great city during the chillier months.

Twilight river cruises, picnics in the park and waterfront cocktails – there’s plenty of fun in the sun to be had when the mercury (kind of) drops in Brisbane. Start off by popping into The City and soaking up that winter morning sunshine with a rooftop alfresco breakfast and a free coffee at Jimmy’s On The Mall. You’ll be well fuelled and ready to browse the open-air Queen Street Mall – retailers such as Jo MercerWil ValorQBD Books, Stephen Dibb Jewellery, Mayfield ChocolatesFurla and many more have some excellent offers currently – then stroll over to the Museum of Brisbane for a Storytellers Walking Tour. These guided tours (which you can score two-for-one at the moment) invite you to discover the many interesting tales of our city’s history. If you choose to embark on the Botanic Gardens tour, pack a rug and follow the tour with lunch on the lawns – you can pick up a jam-packed picnic hamper from The Westin filled with local produce. So you don’t have to worry about where to leave your car all day (the worst), take advantage of $15 daily parking at Wilson Parking in The City if you’re visiting during the week or if you’re planning on a weekend city adventure, book Secure Parking online for $5 weekend and night parking.

Great views, good food and froth-filled pints await at Howard Smith Wharves – there’s even weekly Beer Yoga sessions on the Felons Brewing Co. Lawn every Monday from 5:30–6:15 pm if you’re eager to limber up while you sip on a lager. Bar hop over to Eagle Street Pier, where you can sip cocktails with a spectacular waterfront view at tropical oasis Riverland, indulge in world-class dining at Blackbird Bar & Grill (plus a few cheeky cocktails on the balcony) or tuck into Spanish-style tapas and sip on sangria at Rico Bar and Dining. For a truly unforgettable Brisbane River experience, hop onto a Twilight Cruise and go sailing – cocktail in hand – across the river whilst taking in magical sunset views of the city skyline, Story Bridge and Kangaroo Point. Just remember to bring your jacket!

If you really want to treat yourself, book an Aspen-style Veuve Clicquot Chalet at Customs House where you can sip on bubbly and snack on Moreton Bay Bug croissants under the stars. Forget the Uber fare home – afterwards, retreat to Marriott Brisbane for a luxe overnight staycay complete with free breakfast. If you fancy your cocktails from a higher vantage point, head to rooftop bar Sixteen Antlers, where you can soak in the sun with a tipple and a picturesque outlook. Plus, you can book a weekend stay at the downstairs Pullman King George Square and receive an all-inclusive package with accommodation, breakfast and parking.
