The round-up: Brisbane’s best food trucks

Food trucks aren’t a novel concept to Brisbane eaters – mobile food wagons have been slinging street-food for years now. That being said, the food-truck scene is constantly evolving and more and more wagons are hitting our streets every year. From burgers and pizza to gelato and mac ‘n’ cheese, there are plenty of options to try. We’ve assembled a quick hit-list of must-try food trucks worth seeking out when you’ve got a hankering for mobile munchies.

The Bun Mobile: Let’s kick off proceedings with the food truck that started it all! The Bun Mobile kick-started Brisbane’s street-food obsession with its offering of handcrafted steamed buns stuffed with the likes of twice-cooked pork, slow-cooked wagyu beef and char-grilled teriyaki chicken. With bites like that, it’s not hard to see why this operation is as beloved as it is!

Mr Burger: When it comes to finding burgers on the move, this Melbourne export is a cracking choice. This brightly coloured food van pumps out ten (yes, ten) kinds of burgers, from classic beef and cheese and grilled-chicken burgers to brunch burgers and vegan-friendly bites boasting Beyond Meat patties.

King of the Wings: As far as awards go, few food trucks have racked up as many gongs as King of the Wings. This outfit is food-truck royalty, dispensing tonnes of American-style chicken wings to ravenous hordes across Brisbane. As testament to how tasty these finger-lickin’ really morsels are, King of the Wings even won second place at Wingfest in Buffalo, New York. Not bad for a humble Brisbane-born venture, huh?

KOMA Sliders: Fusion on wheels – that’s the best way to describe the deliciousness available from Koma Sliders. This wagon pumps out a dynamo combination of Korean and American cuisines, from the loaded fries topped with Bulgogi beef and caramelised kimchi to the honey pork-belly burger served with slaw, caramelised onions and spicy mayo.

Mac From Way Back: The drool factor is off the charts with this chew cruiser. Gooey, cheesy macaroni is a specialty here, and when we say cheesy, we mean cheesy. Mac From Way Back’s menu features the likes of the Mac Daddy Burger with beef brisket, bacon, mac ‘n’ cheese and onion rings, the chilli brisket bowl topped with five-cheese mac, and the feral fries featuring bacon and, yep, more mac ‘n’ cheese.

Ruby the Little Red Ice Cream Van: Do you recall the amount of unbridled joy you felt when you heard the jingle of the ice-cream van as it roamed the streets of your neighbourhood? Well, Ruby the Little Red Ice Cream Van is giving Brisbane locals that feeling daily. This stunning English-built classic ice-cream van specialises in premium gluten-free soft-serve, topped with an array of decadent extras that will have you bowled over with equal parts nostalgia and delight.

Rolls Pho Mi: Judged solely on the strength of its street-food scene, Vietnam is undoubtedly one of the best countries on the planet. We’re blessed to have a food truck in town that brings some iconic Vietnamese eats direct to our greedy hands, and that cherished wagon is called Rolls Pho Mi. Rice-paper rolls, roast-pork vermicelli bowls, sliced-beef pho, marinated curry chicken salads – if you’ve got a hankering for some Vietnamese-inspired goodness, Rolls Pho Mi has got you covered.

Happy Soul Bowl: If you want to eat something that’ll make you feel good on inside, then the fare from Happy Soul Bowl is the nourishing nosh you need. Try Happy Soul Bowl’s crispy chicken bowl with crunchy slaw, sweet potato crisps and chilli sauce, the lazy sushi bowl with avocado, edamame beans, brown rice, shredded nori and ginger soy dressing, or the super bowl, which is loaded with fresh green vegetables, quinoa tabouleh, brown rice, roasted chickpeas, tahini dressing and herbs.

Gelato à go-go: Another top dessert dispensary cruising Brisbane’s streets is Gelato à go-go, a converted French Citroen H Van equipped with gelato chambers for optimal refrigeration. Gelato à go-go dishes out scoops of award-winning gelato made by Maleny Food Co, offering a rotating selection of eight flavours at one time, which is only a small fraction of Maleny Food Co’s 100-strong flavour list.

Abbiocco Street Food: Should you be seeking some heart-warming Italian-inspired fare to comfort and satisfy, Abbiocco’s brand of street food is hard to ignore. Must-sample bites include bacon and mozzarella arancini, pulled-pork loaded fries, fried green olives, Italian herb and cheese bread dumplings, fried cauliflower bites, Italian flatbreads and three-cheese tarts. Bellissimo!

Micasa: Pulp Fiction is undoubtedly an iconic piece of cinema, inspiring not only legions of aspiring filmmakers but also some enterprising food-truck operators. Micasa serves up salivation-worthy American street-food bites from its mobile kitchen, from onion rings and wings to stacked burgers, including the famed ‘Royale with Cheese’.
