The round-up: where to find Brisbane’s best katsu dishes

Let’s face it – few foods aren’t improved after being crumbed and fried. That being said, it’s the particular panko-crumbed goodness of katsu that really butters our bread. From curries to sandwiches, katsu dishes offers plenty of variety – and it’s not just chicken that gets the katsu treatment. If you’re keen to catch katsu fever, we’ve assembled a nifty list of spots that will be able to sate a craving.

Bird’s Nest Yakitori, West End and Fortitude Valley: We’re kicking things off with a classic choice – katsu curry. Don’t get it twisted, this curry is not like any you’ve had before. Bird’s Nest serves up a tasty lunch special of tare-infused katsu curry, which is served with rice cracker-crumbed chicken and pickles.

Bishamon, Spring Hill: One of Brisbane’s finest destinations for Japanese cuisine has got you covered in the katsu stakes. Browse the menu and you’ll see the likes of chicken katsu served with tomato sauce, crumbed pork loin and deep-fried beef cutlets.

SONO, Hamilton: Portside Wharf’s SONO is lunchtime lifesaver. Swing by and order the bento box, which comes complete with salmon sashimi, Japanese potato salad, steamed rice, miso soup and, of course, some tasty pork katsu.

Noritor, Brisbane City: George Street’s home of Japanese eats has an entire section of its menu dedicated to katsu. This treasure trove offers up the likes of pork katsu cutlets, fried beef cutlets, chicken katsu and chicken karaage katsu, opening up your lunch possibilities substantially.

KU-O, Woolloongbba and Sunnybank: Although known primarily for its range of sushi and sashimi, KU-O also whips up a host of katsu-based dishes. Patrons can nibble on fish or chicken katsu, or a range of kushikatsu skewers. The restaurant also serves up katsudon, katsu curries, and a huge katsu set, which is perfect if you’re after a substantial meal.

Izakana-Ya Okuman, South Brisbane: This Melbourne Street restaurant is known for its concise range of Japanese bites, which are perfect for a quick pit stop or leisurely nibble. Katsu-crazed eaters will be able to get their fill with Izakana-Ya Okuman’s chicken curries, which come with or without cheese.

Harajuku Gyoza, various locations: Although we love stuffing our faces full of cripsy dumplings, Harajuku Gyoza offers more than just, well, gyoza. This eatery chain has a great chicken katsu curry on its menu that is just the ticket when it’s cold outside. You’ll feel warmed up and satisfied well after the last scoop. Also of note, Harajuku Gyoza also offers a crispy chicken katsu burger, which comes with salad and served on a soft milk bun, through UberEATS only.

Hai-Hai Ramen, Paddington: Although already one of our favourite spots for slurp-worthy ramen, Hai-Hai also captures our katsu-loving heart with its tofu katsu buns. Crispy tofu, coleslaw, mayo and tonkatsu barbecue sauce is stuffed into soft steamed buns. We’re in heaven.

Izakaya Goku, West End: An izakaya is an informal Japanese pub that is perfect for unwinding after a long day (or in the middle of one). West End’s own izakaya serves up the perfect fare to go with a hard-earned drink, including a tasty chicken katsu curry.

Hatori Karaage, Camp Hill: Although the karaage is a specialty, Hatori Karaage is no stranger to the ways of katsu. The kitchen whips up a special gyu katsu bowl, featuring golden-crumed wagyu, served with Japanese cabbage salad and miso soup.

Darling & Co, Paddington: If you’ve got a very particular snack craving, slide on in to Darling & Co and get up close and personal with their pork katsu sliders. These beauties are topped with kewpie, tonkatsu and white cabbage and come in pairs.
