Pie Town Banjo's Bakery Piefection

The round-up: Brisbane’s best pies

Forget your run-of-the-mill lukewarm servo pie – a real pie is a thing of beauty. Comfort food doesn’t get much more comforting than a great pie. Here is our list for must-try pies – you’ll never look at a Four’N Twenty the same ever again.

Pie Town, West End: If you’re cruising down Montague Road in West End and catch the scent of a freshly-baked pie wafting your way, there’s a high chance it’s coming from Pie Town. This charming eatery specialises in both savoury and sweet pies, including pepper-steak pie (stuffed with slow-cooked chunks of grass-fed Echo Valley beef), chicken pot pie (filled with free-range chicken), mushroom bourguignon pie (boasting fresh field mushrooms), bourbon pecan pie, key lime, Snickers, pumpkin pie and the classic apple pie. If you’re a pie lover, this is a must-try, but get in quick as Pie Town will be closing its doors on Sunday July 2. So grab yourself a hot pie before its too late, and give this beloved eatery the send-off it deserves.

Yatala Pies, Yatala: This one’s a classic. Every trip to or from the Gold Coast is made infinitely better by a stop at Yatala Pies. For more than 130 years this pie shop has been cranking out thousands of golden-crusted beauties for us to enjoy and for that we sincerely thank them.

Banjo’s Bakery, Darra: Iconic Tasmanian bakery chain Banjo’s Bakery Cafe opened its first Brisbane-based full-service cafe, bakery and drive-thru in Darra in March 2020, making a splash with its range of signature pies that’ll blow your socks off. Adventurous eaters can chomp into a chicken parmigiana, double-cheeseburger or scallop pie, or settle for the classic beef pie – there’s no wrong choice here!

MICA Express, Brisbane City: The pastry specialists at MICA Express in Macarthur Central have put its talent towards crafting a drool-worthy selection of hand-made hot pies, quiches and sausage rolls to go alongside its array of sweets. Can’t make it into The City? MICA Brasserie next to Breakfast Creek has some options to snag as well!

Jocelyn’s Provisions, various locations: James Street’s home of sweets also boasts a strong savoury selection, which includes crusty pies fit for one or the whole family. Lamb and rosemary, beef and red wine, chicken and mushroom – flavours you simply cant resist.

Banneton Bakery, various locations: If you’re known to pop to your local bakery for a fresh loaf every now and then, we suggest stopping in at your closest Banneton Bakery to snag one of their savoury pies while you’re at it. These hearty beauties boast fillings including beef and Guinness and chicken and mushrooms, as well as a delightful Mexican-inspired option that’ll warm up your insides.

Worthy Pie Co., West End: Are these pies worthy? We’ll let you be the judge, but with options including the High-Steaks (a steak pie made using pasture-fed beef), the Cluckin’ Good Parmy (boasting fried-chicken bites, sautéed onion and garlic, tomatoes and parmesan marinara) and The Boomerang (a veg-loaded option with roasted broccoli, cauliflower, red capsicum, zucchini and house-made yellow coconut curry sauce) on the menu, things are looking good!

Muzza’s Gourmet Pies, Coorparoo: The name Muzza has become synonymous with excellent pastries, and the pies are all the proof you need to certify this spot’s reputation. If variety is a barometer of quality, then wait until you get a load of Muzza’s range! Steak and cheese, mince curry, broccoli, cauliflower and cheese, chicken tandoori, chicken with brie and asparagus and classic chunky steak are just a few of the pastry parcels on offer.

Syd’s Pies, Loganholme: Loganholme is a haven for pies, and Syd’s Pies are well worth investigating if you are ever passing through. This dispensary is often entered into The All Australian Meat Pie Competition, so the quality is high. Savoury or sweet, Syd’s got them all.

Beefy’s, various locations: With a name like Beefy’s, you just know that the pies are going to be something special. With locations found in Brisbane all the way up through the Sunshine Coast, there are plenty of stops for anyone on a road trip north. The signature steak pie shares menu space with Thai green curry, chicken and vegetable and curried steak.

Golden King Bakery, Ashgrove: If you can tear yourself away from Golden King Bakery’s banh mi offering, you’ll notice that its crispy pie selection is stellar as well. The likes of plain chunky steak, tomato with steak, chicken and vegetable and potato-top pies are available, with a delicious golden pastry crust proving irresistible.

King Street Bakery, Bowen Hills: Shannon Kellam’s phenomenal baked-goods concept boasts a top-notch range of sweet and savoury goodies, but if you’re in the mood for pie then there are few better. Pop in for a braised black-Angus beef pie, chicken-curry pie, or a veal osso buco pie and you’ll be glad you did.

Gisler’s Roadside Pie Cafe, Thornlands: Gisler’s Roadside Pie Cafe was one Brisbane’s first pie spots when it opened in 1976, with the Burbank location standing the test of time thanks to its killer array of pastry parcels. We’re talking flavours such as bacon and cheese, curry steak, steak and pepper, and its enormous loaded pies.

Pie Time, Sumner Park: This outlet’s mantra is that it is pie time all the time, and we agree! This is a humble pie chain that goes all out when it comes to creating tasty pie varieties. Pie Time is known to shake things up with its monthly specials – which has included steak and beer – and its signature pies such as the Ned Kelly.

Honourable mentions: Gerbino’s in Ashgrove, Stone Artisan Bakers in South Bank and Greenslopes, Perrett’s Pies in Wynnum, The Bread Corner in Carina and Chouquette and The Bakeologists in New Farm.
