Heading south to Byron from Brisbane, take the turn-off to Cabarita and swing into Halcyon House, where you’ll find one of our own in the kitchen of brand-new venue Paper Daisy. Head chef Ben Devlin – of Esquire and Beerkary Bakery fame – is whipping up simple, seasonal dishes like prawn sandwiches with avocado, mayonnaise and iceberg lettuce, and pastrami beef on rye bread with sauerkraut and pickle.
Just before turning in to Byron Bay, you’ll find Three Blue Ducks at The Farm in Ewingsdale. Grab a takeaway coffee and a fresh pastry, stock up on farm-fresh produce if you plan to cook up your own grub over the weekend, or settle in to the restaurant for a divine feast and a bloody Mary. Continue along Ewingsdale Road and you’ll find 100 Mile Table and Folk in the backstreets. Grab a turmeric tonic and a bacon butty with tomato jam from 100 Mile Table or a bowl of vanilla porridge with honey-baked apple and a chai from Folk.
If you’re staying in Byron Bay itself, perennial favourite Bayleaf Cafe will no doubt be packed across the weekend, but the Marvell Street coffee and nourishing nosh is certainly worth the wait. Think stuffed sweet potatoes, Italian crepes and organic coconut and quinoa porridge. Roadhouse Cafe Bar is dishing up a brand-new menu, with divine hangover remedies like the BLT featuring local wood-smoked bacon, Coopers Shoot tomatoes, fresh greens and aioli on a Bread Social organic bun and the lunch cocktail Rum Shine of fairtrade organic rum, cold-pressed ginger and turmeric, jelly-bush honey syrup, sparkling water and cracked black pepper. Naked Treaties raw bar will heal that sore head with fresh juices, superfood smoothies and kombucha, while the In the Pink gelato shop will perk you up with flavours like sticky date pudding, cheesecake and the heavenly fresh blueberry with roasted coconut and mascarpone.
If you’re venturing out to Bangalow, TOWN offers breakfast, lunch and coffee in its downstairs venue by day, and dinner and drinks upstairs at night. Daily baked treats, Paul Bassett coffee and the famous egg and bacon brekkie rolls are sure to sort you out. A little further south, Newrybar’s prized venue Harvest combines cafe, bakery and deli to form the perfect weekend wind-down destination. Grab a warm treat from the 101-year-old woodfired oven and a cup of Allpress Carmelo coffee before the drive home.
