Coffee titan Campos opens its stunning new cafe Long Island in Newstead

Over a span of more than 10 years, Campos has grown from fledgling roaster to one of Australia's preeminent proponents of craft caffeine. The powers behind the hospitality group are making some changes in 2018, the largest being the relocation of its Brisbane flagship cafe from Wandoo Street to a stylish location in Newstead. The newly opened Campos Long Island is a stunning and modern hub, blending the brand’s renowned coffee service with new multi-faceted offerings that take diners from sunrise through to sunset.

The details
Few successful hospitality groups remain so by staying static, and the team behind Campos knows that in order to prosper they have to evolve. Campos’ directors Eugene Phua and John Ronchi are rarely idle, expanding Campos over the years from a local venture to an international powerhouse. After closing up shop at its beloved Wandoo Street headquarters earlier this year, the duo announced a new project one suburb over in Newstead – a brand-new flagship that showcased a mature approach to the craft – as result of the roaster’s growth over the past decade. The team linked up with Damien Cavalucci’s Cavcorp to install Campos Long Island at the base of the developer’s luxury apartment building Lucent, where locals and Brisbane at large could come and enjoy a relaxed offering that catered to any lifestyle.

The space
Scott Petherick of Sp Studio Architecture (and the brains behind Campos Piccolo’s aesthetic) was recruited for the interior design, working with Eugene and John to develop a modern look that paid attention to fine details and aligned with the established Campos vibe. Campos Long Island is seriously spacious at 500-sqm, with a contemporary industrial space that features a striking combination of materials such as concrete, leather and timber, as well as sizeable street-front windows and foliage providing natural ambience. The 170-seater venue extends from a central coffee and bar space outward to retail shelves and a sunny courtyard setting at the main entry, while at the rear of the venue sits top-of-the-line roasting gear and a private function space. The coffee counter is impressive, with four machines installed to deliver the goods in record time, alongside drip-coffee apparatus and an eye-catching bar, back-lit to show off the assembled labels.

The food and drink
Fans of wholesome fare will get a kick out of knowing that Campos Long Island will be retaining much of its renowned food offering, continuing to focus on simple dishes for breakfast, lunch and takeaway eats. As per usual, Campos Long Island’s barista team will be slinging top-notch coffee, with espresso, V60 and cold-drip beverages on hand in addition to loose-leaf tea, fresh juices, smoothies and milkshakes. For the first time in Brisbane, Campos will be catering to the sundowner crowd with a smart tapas and liquor service. The kitchen will shift from lunch to nibbles, while the coffee machines will be turned off in favour of cocktail shakers. Patrons can sample unique Australian wines and beers, as well as a cocktail selection that links back to coffee in some way or form. We’re talking espresso martinis made using Campos’ own cold-drip coffee, and Long Island Iced Teas made with cascara coffee cherry tea.
