Cheap and cheerful – where to find a feed in The City for less than $20

Real talk – finding a decent feed in the CBD can be an absolute mission. Whether you’re taking time out of your precious lunch break or seeking fuel for your next shopping spree, finding a bite that won’t break the bank can be tricky business. Good news, folks – there’s a prime spot for cheap eats in the city that’s hiding right under your nose. We’ve chomped, chewed and tasted our way around Wintergarden to bring you our definitive list of bargain bites that don’t compromise on quality.

Sushi Deli: While Sushi Deli may do its delicious namesake rolls exceptionally well, it has a whole other menu of delicious Japanese eats to slurp and sample your way through. You can get your hands on the likes of karaage chicken, seared salmon bowls, bright poke, brothy ramen and steamed gyoza made fresh – with nothing costing more than $12.

Coco Bliss: If you skipped out on breakfast this morning, there’s no need to fret – Coco Bliss has got you covered with a huge range of nourishing cheap eats and superfood bowls. Ditch the stodge and go for something filling and fresh – the vegan toast toppers here will only set you back $6 per slice! This ain’t no Vegemite situation – we recommend the avo bruschetta made up of smashed avo topped with a tomato bruschetta mix and a drizzle of balsamic.

FantAsia: No time to mess around? FantAsia’s food philosophy is about bringing you the flavours of Asia in a fast and fabulous manner, and you best believe they make good on this promise. For a filling feed that’s light on the wallet, order the new pork chops dish – you get two succulent chops smothered in your choice of either sweet chilli or plum sauce for a very tidy $10.99.

Grill’d: Indecisive people, this one’s for you – why choose one burger when you can have three in a miniature form? Grill’d has got all of your cravings covered with its range of sliders – grab a pair for $12 or splash out with a trio for $15. Mix and match between the likes of classic and vintage beef varieties, a tasty chicken and brie combo or satay chicken.

Guzman y Gomez: You may not think a Mexican taqueria is the ideal spot to go for breakfast, but we implore you to open your mind for Guzman y Gomez’s morning offering – especially for the price. Get your hands on a mouth-watering breakfast burrito for $7.50, which is stuffed with a hash brown, scrambled eggs, melted Jack cheese, pico de gallo salsa and a filling of your choice (bacon, chorizo or sautéed vegetables).

Hanaichi Sushi Bar and Dining: One of the cleverest ways to get a delicious feast for less is by teaming up with a pal, which is what we would suggest to max your dollars at Hanaichi Sushi Bar and Dining. Grab a partner in crime and tackle the Combination Hosomaki – you get a whopping 12 cucumber rolls, 12 avocado rolls, 12 mini salmon rolls and 12 mini tuna rolls for $30, which is a total steal when you split it right down the middle.

Hokka Hokka: Keen to take matters into your own hands? Hokka Hokka will satisfy your need for control. The DIY noodle bar allows you to choose between three styles – clear soup noodles, laksa and stir fry noodles – then go for either one topping (for $12.90) or two toppings (for $14.90) bolstered with a generous mix of vegetables. Meat, seafood and even more veggies are all topping options depending on your mood.

I Heart Brownies: If your sweet tooth needs satiating, I Heart Brownies should be your first port of call. These adorable sweet treats are all gluten free, totally delicious and come in at $5 or under – that’s a lot of boxes ticked! We recommend the Jaffa or mint flavours from the classic range, or splashing out on the platinum salted caramel or Nutella if you’re feeling fancy.

ISPA Kebabs: Flavours of the Middle East are calling you, so submit to your cravings at ISPA. From jam-packed kebabs to fresh gozleme and mouth-watering salads, there are plenty of tasty bargains to be had. We recommend going all-out with the loaded fries – with the biggest size only setting you back $5.50, you can afford to treat yourself to all of the 80c toppings you can handle.

PappaRich: When it comes to value for money without compromising on quality, Malaysian eatery PappaRich is right up there with the best. The home-style cuisine provides a great flavour snapshot of authentic Malaysian flavours made to shine with fresh ingredients. We can’t go past the Roti canai with tandoori chicken, cooked to order in a generous portion with sides of raita and sambal for a mere $15.90.

Soul Origin: While you might know Soul Origin for its nourishing salads and loaded sandwiches, the soup selection is truly something to behold. The constantly rotating selection of hearty concoctions is anchored by a menu of classics, but it’s hard to go past the rich pumpkin soup. Get your hands on a piping-hot cup of goodness for just $5.90 or go large for $8.50, and pick up some wholemeal, soy and linseed or Panini bread to soak up the leftovers for just $1 extra.

Hanaichi: We all know that Japan is famous for its sushi, but there is more to this country than its delicious and convenient rolls. Hanaichi is all about making amazing Japanese dishes that showcase the diversity of the country’s cuisine, and the price is definitely right – you can get the restaurant’s signature dish of Japanese curry with rice in a variety of sizes and flavours. Choose between chicken, pork and tofu then decide how hungry (or broke) you are – it’s $6.40 for a small, $8.40 for a regular and $10.20 to go large.

SpudBAR: Potatoes truly are nature’s gift to us, and SpudBAR capitalises on this gift by showcasing the humble vegetable’s versatility. Built on the platform that potatoes, sweet potatoes and salads are a great base for a healthy dish, this eatery is a great spot to fill up on nourishing fare for a bargain. Try the brand-new Spanish Spud – choose sweet or white potatoes loaded with baby spinach, SpudBAR Spanish sauce, roasted pumpkin, sweet corn, light sour cream and spring onions for just $10.90.

Sushiro:
The classic sushi roll is a great option when it comes to filling up for less, so if you’re going to do it you should do it right. Take a pocketful of spare change to Sushiro and feast on hand-rolled sushi made fresh every day – prices start at just $2.80 and include a range of classic combos that you know and love.

Crafty Cuts: You might find the thought of a sandwich uninspiring, but the selections at Crafty Cuts will have you whistling a different tune. Slow-roasted meats, fresh salads and pillowy soft bread combine to create the kind of sangas you just can’t make at home. Wrap your lips around a Reuben for just $12.90 – smoked brisket, sauerkraut, mustard, Swiss cheese, chipotle aioli and pickles never tasted so good.
