The Yiros Shop Izakaya Kotobuki Mr Bunz Melt Brothers Mrs Luu's Junk

The round-up: ten cheap inner-city lunches for a tenner or less

Put your hands up if you’ve ever experienced this harsh reality bite – payday is still a few days away and you’ve been stung by a few unexpected costs (or maybe you indulged in a costly weekend on the town), reducing your bank balance to a shell of its former glory. We’ve all walked down Struggle Street before, but any thrifty eaters will tell you that it’s not the end of the world. If you can’t stomach another stretch of mi goreng for lunch, we’ve put together a nifty list of spots to grab a bite for ten Dollarydoos or less. Mark our words – the cheaper the grub doesn’t mean the lesser the quality. You can get a bomb feed in Brisbane’s inner city for just a tenner and here is the proof.

Melt Brothers: There isn’t much better that a grilled cheese sambo, and Melt Brothers makes some of the best in town. Experience some stellar cheese pull with Melt Brothers’ Triple Cheese for just $6.50, or spend a few extra bucks on your cheap eats and go for the Morning Glory, which can be all yours for $9.

Govindas: Thank the heavens for places like Govindas. Patrons can fill their belly with vegan delicacies at the Brisbane City location for a steal. If you have $10 to spend you can gorge on three dishes and rice or a quiche and salad for $9. Also, if you are a starving student you can take in the all-you-can-eat and drink feast meal for $10.

Mr Bunz: One of Brisbane City’s newest residents has added a whole lot of great value to the CBD, offering tasty and filling bao buns for cheap. Mr Bunz serves up pork and chicken bao buns for $5 a piece, or you can splash out on a duck bun for $6.50.

Izakaya Kotobuki: One of the biggest names in Brisbane’s sushi scene is also feeding the masses with a great selection of well-priced meals. Izakaya Kotobuki on Albert Street is a must-try when your budget this slim simply for its wide range of donburi rice bowls. These bad boys will cost you $8 and there are plenty of options to choose from.

Mrs Luu’s: The humble banh mi is a near unbeatable choice when considering three factors – taste, price and convenience. Mrs Luu’s serves up a few different kinds of banh mi that will only cost you $8.50 (price – tick) with some super delicious fillings (taste – tick) and you can grab it and eat it on the move (convenience – tick).

The Yiros Shop: If you are wandering around the City, South Bank or Fortitude Valley, you’ll always have a filling and inexpensive snack within reach at The Yiros Shop. Grab yourself a haloumi yiros made on a fluffy pita and stuffed with chips, tomato and onion for $9 and tuck in.

The Manhattan Line: On the southern side of the Brisbane River, The Manhattan Line is a godsend for those seeking inexpensive eats. Hotdogs are the name of the game here, and patrons can order the classic NYC Dog for $8 or go big with the Atland or Kansas hotdogs for $10.

Junk: When it comes to value for money, you can take your money further at Junk in South Bank. Here are some bites you can get for $10 each – Koren fried chicken wings, steamed pork dumplings, Vietnamese noodle salad, pork ramen or Gangnam fries topped with kimchi, nacho cheese sauce and nori.

Wrapture: West End’s home of zesty wraps has a few selections that are within budget. We recommend heading to Wrapture and trying the Olympus wrap (with lemon chicken) or the Zen Tofu wrap (with teriyaki tofu and wasabi mayo) for $10 each.

Green Beacon Brewing: Over in Teneriffe, Green Beacon is not only a great place to blow the froth off a cold beverage, but you can grab a cheap feed with ease. If you like bagels, Green Beacon has four options available for $9 each, while also serving British pork pies with mustard and pickles for $10.
