Dining on a dime – where to grab Queen Street Mall’s best cheap eats this autumn

Venturing into the city for lunch but want to stick to a budget? Luckily for those strapped for cash, there's no shortage of cheap eats in and around Queen Street Mall, so much so that sometimes the options are a bit overwhelming. If you're searching for a tastebud-tingling feast that will fill your belly but not empty your wallet, we have rounded up some dynamite deals that are being dished out. Read on to find out what you should stick a fork in to ...

Whether you work in The City or are merely visiting, you’re going to need to refuel with some lunchtime fare to get you through the day. So you don’t end up dropping half of your weekly pay on your midday feed, Queen Street Mall is slinging some wallet-friendly eats that are worth taste testing. You can cure your cravings with a moreish vegan salad poke bowl for $11.90 from Spud Bar in Wintergarden, packed with the likes of beetroot, corn, avocado, edamame and more on a bed of sweet potato. The centre is also home to the mouth-watering Asian-inspired eats of Hokka Hokka, where you can devour one dish for $11.90 or two dishes for $13.90, both served with your choice of rice or noodles – all you have to do is mention this offer to get that extra-special price. Dollar-saving dumplings await at New Shanghai in QueensPlaza, where you can get eight steamed xiao long bao pork morsels for just $10.80 (hello, brothy goodness!), or Greek-food lovers can get their fix with a Tzimmy Classic chicken or pork pita wrap for $11.50 from Zeus Street Greek, which will conveniently leave you with some extra cash to splash on some haloumi chips (it would be rude not to). If all of this delicious nosh has got you feeling thirsty, you can sate your senses with a boba tea for you and your mates from Chatime, who are pouring four drinks for just $20 (that’s $5 a pop!) – just mention “April four for $20” to redeem and you’ll be the office hero.

More bargain belly fillers await at The Myer Centre, where you can score spicy pork wonton soup for $11.50 from Taste Gallery, or make tracks to Thai Street Kitchen to nab a tastebud-tempting pad Thai or fried rice with chicken and a refreshing bevvie for $14.80. Wrap your mitts around some Korean chicken drumsticks with chips and salad for $9.90 from fried-chicken dispensary Nene Chicken, or make tracks up to the Queen Street Mall to slurp up some soul-warming nagahama ramen for $14 from Hakataya Ramen – perfect for those cold snaps. Over at MacArthur Central you’ll find some more inexpensive fare with dining destinations like Rice & Mee serving up teriyaki chicken and rice with your choice of lychee or passionfruit iced tea for $9, and Nou Indian cooking up $25 biryani meal deals for two with raita and drinks as well as $9.90 butter chicken and rice. Yellow Saigon is plating up lemongrass-infused chicken with rice for a criminally cheap $6.50 or quench your thirst at Sharetea with any two regular size drinks from the top ten Sharetea menu for $10 – just be sure to mention these offers when ordering. Now that you’ve saved some pretty pennies on lunch, you can start a fund for after-work drinks – it’s only economical.
