It’s hip to be square – Coorparoo Square unveils its first wave of openings

Folks, it’s here! It’s finally here! One of the most highly anticipated developments has come to life after some perspiration-soaked anticipation. Coorparoo Square has gradually ascended above Cavendish Road over the past few months, swelling with the promise of hip new bars and eateries and a host of other quality retailers. Well, this week marks the first wave of openings in the centre, ranging from tantalising taquerias, choice coffee spots, gorgeous gelaterias and beautiful bars. Before you flock to chock your mouth full of goodies, have a closer look at what Coorparoo Square is bringing to town.

It’s not often that an entire food district pops up overnight, and while we’ve waited patiently for Coorparoo Square to open, it certainly feels like Christmas right now. This week the precinct welcomed locals to check out its initial line of new eateries and retail spots, turning Coorparoo from a sleepy suburb into a cosmopolitan hotspot in an instant. In case you missed it (we don’t know how you could have missed it – it was big news), the first cab of the rank Beyond The Pale opened its doors at the beginning of November, serving up a range of frosty beverages and a range of dynamo eats. We’re talking breakfast bites, chicken wings, wagyu cheeseburgers and mac’n’cheese nuggets, washed down by collection of beers, Pimm’s on tap and a back bar full of top-shelf drops.

Bringing a touch of traditional Mexican cuisine to Coorparoo Square is Barbacoa, a Mexican taqueria that is reportedly as close to authentic as you can get without jumping on a plane to Mexico City. Barbacoa specialises in tacos, tortas and tostadas – inspired by the street-food scene of Mexico – as well as burritos and burrito bowls following cues of popular San Franciscan eatery La Taqueria. The key difference between Barbacoa and other Mexican food outlets is that the Barbacoa team makes its tortillas fresh daily, grilled and  kept warm to ensure the perfect level of malleability. Flavours and fillings include slow-cooked meats such as shredded beef marinated in spices, steak fried with onions, pork marinated with citrus and achiote and chicken cooked in adobo sauce, which are paired with a range of salads, Mexican beers, margaritas and Jarritos Mexican soda.

Another newcomer arrives in the form of Junk, the incredibly popular Asian eatery that caused a stir in early 2017 when it opened its first Brisbane location in South Bank. The Maroochydoore-born brand has started serving up a range of Asian-inspired street food in Coorparoo Square, unveiling a brand-new menu that features some mouth-watering creations. Patrons can grab a table and choose from the likes of braised shiitake mushroom baos, satay chicken skewers, Thai-style grilled pork belly, lamb rendang curry and grilled king prawns with crispy mantou buns. The morning coffee crowd is amply catered for at Kivahan’s second Brisbane location, which is pouring its signature organic, air-roasted coffee, while across the way La Mimosa Gelato adds a splash of colour and sweetness to Coorparoo Square’s main promenade and Mission Vietnamese brings a well-balanced menu of traditional Vietnamese eats to the area.

Cinephiles in Brisbane’s east have no doubt been ticking off days in their calendar in the lead up to Dendy’s arrival at Coorparoo Square next week on Thursday November 30. The centre is heraldeding the fully licensed cinema’s imminent arrival, which will boast ten state-of-the-art screens over three levels, including two premium theatres and a lounge bar with views of Coorparoo and beyond. Locals can also add a new Aldi supermarket to their local grocery selection, as well as a Commonwealth Bank location. The coming weeks and months will see more hotspots call Coorparoo Square home. We’re looking forward to the arrival of Acai Brothers on Saturday November 25, followed by the likes of Saffron Indian, Special Rub, Sense of Taste and more. Keep your eye on The Weekend Edition as we take a look at each new arrival as they open.
