Pavement Whispers: Cowch to sweeten up South City Square with a new gelato bar concept

This year is going to be an exciting one for Woolloongabba residents. A procession of food-based concepts are set to make their debut at Pellicano's Logan Road precinct South City Square before 2022 is out, treating local foodies to a degustation of brand-new dining destinations. Like any good feast, expect a sweet finish – the brains behind dessert purveyor Cowch Dessert Cocktail Bar have confirmed that the team will be opening its own gelato concept at the hub this September. Here's what we know ...

We’ve been waiting with bated breath for news of South City Square’s next phase of hospitality arrivals. Last year the retail, residential and commercial precinct celebrated the debut of fashionable eatery Sasso Italiano – the first of many eateries and bars expected to call the hub home once complete. In the coming months, we’re expecting to see the launch of a new wine bar, a tapas bar fusing Chinese and Cuban influences, a gin bar, gastropub, a cinema, market hall and, eventually, the arrival of a brand-new hotel. One more forthcoming arrival that’ll no doubt give gourmands a sensational sugar high is Cowch Gelato Bar, the brand-new concept from the confection creators behind Cowch Dessert Cocktail Bar. The opening marks a slight change in direction for the sweet-treat specialist, which boasts cocktail bar locations in South Bank, ChermsideUpper Mount Gravatt and Broadbeach, as well as its newly minted commercial kitchen and headquarters (known as the Dream Factory) in Morningside. Cowch’s founder Arif Memis is looking to supplement the Cowch portfolio with smaller stores imbued with a bit of playful and youthful energy. Whereas the cocktail bars are perfect for post-dinner dessert and drinks, Cowch Gelato Bar will be a family-friendly outpost for indulgence seekers of all ages.

Cowch Gelato Bar’s offering is exactly as advertised on the label. The team will be hawking 20 rotating out-of-the-box flavours of gelato, dispensed from a specialty cabinet described as the first of its kind in Australia. Arif is keeping exact details on the flavour range secret for now but has assured us that the options will be anything but basic and hinted that those that attended the recent Brisbane Ice Cream Festival may have already enjoyed a sneaky taste of what’s to come. In addition to gelato, the site will also sell Cowch’s famous churros and waffles, as well as coffee and shakes. Although boasting a smaller footprint than its older sibling locations, Cowch Gelato Bar will complement its mural-adorned 60-sqm interior with plenty of outside seating.

All going to plan, Cowch Gelato Bar will open in the first week of September – we’ll have more details for you closer to closer to its opening date.
