David Kurniawan hadn’t considered opening a new cafe so soon after the January arrival of Cups on Melbourne, but when the right opportunity knocks, you have to answer. Nine months after David and the Cups & Co. team opened the grab-and-go-oriented West End sibling to his Salisbury cafe Cups and Wells, he was approached with an opportunity to bring his style of coffee-forward service to the base of Aria Property Group’s newly completed Amira Residences, situated on Wellington Road in East Brisbane. The cosy nook offered the team the chance to implement a spiritually similar concept to Cups on Melbourne, but a bit more elbow room allowed the possibility of a more diverse offering. Also seeing a ripe opportunity to tap into a new demographic, David signed on to install Cups on Wellington on site. With a blank canvas to work with, David and co. have been able to apply an eye-catching modern aesthetic that complemented Amira’s architectural facade. A terracotta-based colour scheme has been applied to the inside to match the earthy tones of the exterior, offset by some eye-catching tile work and a pop of vibrant illumination courtesy of a neon sign affixed to the feature wall. Although suited to cater to the caffeine-deprived commuter rush, a scattering of small and large tables can seat roughly 30 patrons lucky enough to have time to linger.
Cups on Wellington boasts a larger kitchen space than its West End counterpart, which means that the crew has been able to build upon its established menu of eats with something suited to dine-in. Chef Mario Asero has been recruited to oversee the new additions and also freshen up the grab-and-go options at both East Brisbane and West End locations. The tasty fun begins with the selection of signature jaffles stuffed with tasty fillings like truffle mushroom, savoury mince and mozzarella, braised greens with fetta, and bacon and onion with rosemary butter. The carby goodness continues with Cups on Wellington’s selection of buns (options include bacon and egg, mortadella, egg, provolone cheese and salsa verde, and salami or prosciutto with sliced provolone), which then segue into a curated array of mains. These delicacies offer up the likes of avocado on toast, French toast lathered in butterscotch and orange labne, baked cannellini beans and pita plates – the latter comes topped in your choice of scrambled eggs, avocado and bacon, buffalo mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes, or cucumber, onions, fetta, capsicum and olives. Also worth noting is the treats cabinet, which houses sweets from The Bake List and a selection of pre-made morsels perfect for munching on the move. As always, coffee is a big focus, but at Cups on Wellington the team have adopted a multi-roaster approach. The Newstead blend from Industry Beans is on deck alongside the Paradigm Blend from northern-New South Wales outfit Therefore Coffee Roasters and beans from Melbourne-based Market Lane Coffee, with options to suit milk-based and filter brews. Beyond caffeine, Cups on Wellington also serves matcha, turmeric and red-velvet lattes alongside loose-leaf teas, cold-pressed juices, masala chai and smoothies – plenty of quaffing material for anyone easing off the jumping juice.
