If you recognise Doc Brown owner Christian Maltby from somewhere, you’ve probably frequented his former coffee nook Brown Dog Cafe. The hospitality veteran sold the cafe in order to move on to his latest project Doc Brown – a community-minded operation that blends Christian’s infectious love for good food and coffee with a dash of his own extraneous passions. Occupying a sunny corner location at the base of Escent Apartments in West End, Doc Brown boasts a welcoming feel, with a cheerful timber and concrete aesthetic crafted by Oliveaux Interiors complemented nicely by some assembled greenery, bench and communal seating, and a painted mural by artist Ryan McShane. As Christian is a bit of a film buff, Doc Brown is dotted with framed movie posters and memorabilia. Don’t get it twisted, Doc Brown is not a man cave, but rather a tasteful and ever-evolving amalgamation of Christian’s loves – food and film.

Speaking of food, there’s a lot to like at Doc Brown. A forthcoming make-your-own breakfast menu will cover all the classic staples you hope to see at brekkie, while some enticing twists are sure to get your saliva glands working. In the meantime, the kitchen is pumping out a range of gourmet toasties, with the likes of Reuben sandwiches, kimchi, chicken, chive and preserved lemon, pulled pork, prosciutto and mozzarella and other stuffed sangas waiting for you to wrap your laughing gear around. Sarmic Cafe will be supplying the sweets and treats, while Genovese is supplying the good stuff – otherwise known as the coffee. Doc Brown will continue to build up its offering in the near future – we hear talk of kombucha on tap, smoothies and outdoor dining on the cards, so be sure to stop by Doc Brown regularly.
