Street food is the heart and soul of many Southeast Asian countries, with their cities boasting rustic food joints and locally run food carts that serve up delicious, uncomplicated and – a lot of the time – super-cheap fare. Brisbane City dining destination Fat Noodle takes this hawker-style approach and runs with it for Luke Nguyen’s new street eats menu, which is full of salty, spicy, sweet and tangy flavours that will fill your belly and stimulate your senses. Start your street eats journey by grazing from a platter of tastebud-tempting chargrilled pork skewers with vermicelli noodles, then move on to the spicy chilli and garlic marinated squid skewers with a snappy flavour that packs a punch. The tantalising share-food heroes don’t stop there, with satay chicken skewers with peanut sauce and grilled quail skewers served with Asian slaw also available to munch on.
Seafood fanatics can tuck into a pot of fresh black mussels in a coconut and lemongrass broth served with a freshly baked baguette before devouring a plate of lightly battered salt-and-pepper calamari topped with sriracha sour cream. Lovers of laab (a traditional Thai dish with greens and minced meat) can choose from laab chicken or pork with lemongrass, fresh chilli and garlic-infused chicken served with cucumber, tomato and lettuce. Another must-try delight is the som tam, which combines green papaya, green beans, carrots, fresh chilli and tomatoes topped with shrimp tamarind dressing and peanuts.
Alongside its new street eats menu, Fat Noodle will continue to dish up its signature Vietnamese-inspired dishes alongside crowd-pleasing Chinese, Thai and Malaysian hawker-style fare including favourites such as Luke’s legendary 20-hour Fat Pho Noodles, a fiery chicken and seafood laksa and a fresh Vietnamese chicken salad. You can wash it all down with a selection of refreshing beverages, with both local and imported wines and beers available. Sweet tooths can finish off their feast with a pandan coconut cream brulee or banana fritters topped with caramel sauce, cinnamon ice-cream and almond flakes.
