Fonzie Abbott set to release a guava and mango-flavoured sour beer so that’s our summer sips sorted

After winning over the caffeine-loving populace with its brilliant brews, Fonzie Abbott turned its attention to brews of a different kind and launched into the craft-beer game in 2018. Since then, the crew have turned into a one-stop libation shop slinging Monday-morning hits of energy through to Sunday arvo sundowners but friends, there's a new beer on the horizon and we're told it's the stuff of dreams, sour dreams to be specific.

If you fancy yourself a little bit of a craft-beer connoisseur and appreciate all of the complexities of the swill, it probably isn’t news to you that sour beers (and seltzers, but that’s another story) are set to become your go-to beverages for sipping in the sunshine. But don’t be fooled into thinking they are some kind of new fad, sour beer is actually the oldest type of beer in history – true story! Before things like pasteurisation and sterilisation were a thing, all of the beer was a little tart-tasting as it was made with wild bacteria and yeasts. As brewing technology advanced, beer began to be brewed in sterile environments using specific yeast strains to ensure consistency of flavour but some say that took away a bit of the fun. Sour beer is a bit of a roulette, some you’ll love, some you’ll adore – there are no losers when it comes to the sour suds.

The specific details on Fonzie Abbott’s new brew is being kept under wraps for the minute but we can reveal it will be called Sour Dreams and will contain flavours of guava and mango. Keen for a taste? Sour Dreams will be available locally at Zero Fox, Streetcorner Jimmy, Cooper’s Specialty Coffee and Tap House, The Village Social, Suburban Social, Southbank Beer Garden and Archive Beer Boutique. Oh, and if you’re a fan of Fonzie Abbott and missed the news, almost two years after expanding its Albion roastery to house a brewery, the team has announced a new taproom for its multi-faceted Fox Street venue. Excitingly, the brews will be available straight from the tank come November when it opens its doors – yes you read right, there’s no keg system, the beers will be poured directly from the tanks. Now that’s what we call sipping from the source.
