Forget empty supermarket shelves – the best fruit, veg and meat boxes to get delivered

It's pretty safe to assume that by now you're well aware of the situation at your local supermarket, so let's not rehash the details. The good news is that there is an alternative. If you're keen to spare yourself from the chaos (or disgruntlement at empty shelves) while also supporting local farmers in the process, we've rounded up a few places that are delivering fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and more to your door.

Food Connect: As its name suggests, the Brisbane-based social enterprise is connecting you with seasonal and ecological food direct from farmers. Food Connect offers a range of boxes starting from just $48 for the Mini Box through to $63 for the Large Veg Box. The Food Connect range now extends beyond just fruit and veg – you can upgrade you box to ‘The Lot‘ with your choice of eggs, bread and milk, or add fridge and pantry items such as dairy goods, meat, nuts, condiments, home-cleaning products and more. If you’re stuck in iso, Food Connect offers home delivery for a flat fee of $10, or you can opt for free pick-up from one of its City Cousins – families and businesses across Brisbane and the Gold Coast that have graciously opened up their homes for you to pick up your order from.

Scenic Rim Farm Box: A joint initiative between Scenic Rim farmers and Scenic Rim Regional Council, Scenic Rim Farm Box was born out of the 2019 COVID lockdowns as a way to connect city consumers with the region while they were unable to travel. The Scenic Rim is renowned for its exceptional produce and producers, so you better believe these boxes are brimming with some of the best you can get. Each Thursday at 5:00 pm, the online shop is updated with the week’s season selection, all of which is available for you to create your own customisable box. Fruit and veg, meat, eggs and milk are available pretty much year-round, in additional to seasonal products such as gourmet cheeses, skincare, baked goods and condiments – you can even add locally made booze to your order! The team currently delivers to Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Redlands, the Gold Coast and the Scenic Rim weekly, and Toowoomba and Highfields every fortnight.

Echo Valley FarmFor a true paddock to plate experience, Echo Valley Farms is the way to go. The 300-acre property in the Goomburra Valley is run by the Breen Family, who have developed a multi-species integrated farming system that includes cattle, sheep, poultry, pigs, hay/grain and seasonal small crops. The family practices ethical, sustainable, regenerative and holistic farming, which led to the development of its ‘4 Good’ principle – good for the animal, good for the land, good for the farmer and good for you. Echo Valley’s online store features the likes of eggs, grass-fed beef, pastured pork, organic chicken, a small selection of fruit and veg, honey, oil, tea, baked goods and even flowers. Delivery is on Friday and Saturday each week across Brisbane, Ipswich, Warwick and Boonah.

9Dorf Farms: For more direct-from-the-farmer goodness, head to 9Dorf Farms. This fifth-generation family-owned business has been farming in the Lockyer Valley since 1918, so you could say they know a thing or two about good produce. The Neuendorf family is passionate about sustainable farming, striving to continuously improve the environment and produce ethically raised animals. Chicken and fish are your key produce here – select from a range of products including whole and cut chickens, chicken sausages, prepared meals (chicken kiev, anyone?), Murray cod fillets and barramundi fillets. 9Dorf delivers to Brisbane, Ipswich, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

Brisbane Valley Farm Direct: Located new the picturesque Wivenhoe Dam, Brisbane Valley Farm Direct is run by fourth-generation farmers, delivering farm-fresh, world-class meat at cheaper-than-retail prices to hungry Southeast Queenslanders. The website features an array of boxes to choose from, with the likes of the Family Feast Box (think mince, chicken thighs, a weekly roast and more), the Gourmet Grill Box (with premium steak, lamb loin chops and deboned butterflied quail), mix fruit and veg boxes, ready-made reheat-and-eat meals and even boxes curated by renowned local chef Jason Peppler.

Sunshine Organics: If you’re looking for a service that supports local, ethical, sustainable and organic farmers, Sunshine Organics is the service for you. This family-owned business connects consumers with local certified organic farmers and artisan producers, delivering a range of more than 1000 products such as fresh fruit and veg, eggs, meat, deli and pantry items, household and beauty products and more. Sunshine curates seasonal set boxes of fruit and veg (you can even set up a recurring order) or you can choose exactly what you need. Delivery days vary depending on location, with Sunshine Organics delivering from the Byron Bay regional all the way up the coast to Rockhampton.

Big Michael’s Fruit & Vegetables: Big Michael’s was founded by Brisbane local Peter Marinos in 2009, with help from his father, Michael, a Greek immigrant who started working in the markets back in 1987. After working with his father for a number of years, Peter decided it was time to branch out on his own. What started as a small delivery business – with just one ute and one customer – has now grown to a fleet of 15 trucks that service more than 1000 wholesale customers. Big Michael’s now also delivers to homes across Brisbane (and a handful of Gold Coast suburbs) within a 38-km radius of its Rocklea Markets base, offering fruit and veg (you can choose your own or opt for pre-selected boxes starting from $40), plus other items such as olive oil, beverages, honey and wood for smoking.

Farm2MarketFarm2Market is essentially an online farmers market that connects local farmers with consumers. By typing in your postcode you can see the vendors you have access to in your local area, with options including fruit and veg boxes, meat packs, general groceries and even health and beauty products. Farm2Market is perfect for those who would like the convenience of home delivery to stretch beyond just edible goods.

Farm Fresh Organics: This 100 percent organic food-delivery service is the brainchild of Brisbane locals Shane and Cath Heaton, who now live at the picturesque Blueberry Hill Organic Farm on Tamborine Mountain. Shane and Cath have dedicated their lives to growing, eating and selling healthy and organic food, working with a collection of local farmers and producers to deliver the freshest organic produce available to homes across Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and surrounds. In addition to top-quality fruit, veg and herbs, Farm Fresh Organics offers a full bakery, butcher, dairy selection, frozen goods, ready-to-eat products, pantry items, beverages, health, beauty and baby products, and eco home and garden products. You’ll never need to go to a major supermarket again.

Harris Farm Markets: This family-owned-and-operated grocer has taken Southeast Queensland by storm in the last year, providing us with a new, independent option when it comes to day-to-day food shopping. With a focus on sustainable initiatives and supporting local while still offering everyday convenience, Harris Farm Markets bridges the gap between traditional supermarkets and weekly farmers markets. If you’re stuck in iso or just trying to avoid the crowds, you’ll be pleased to know that Harris Farm Markets offers the majority of its range online for contactless delivery across Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Northern New South Wales – we’re talking everything from fruit and veg to meat and seafood, dry goods, gourmet cheeses, bakery goods and more.

Due to increased demand, we recommend checking with the delivery service prior to ordering to avoid disappointment.
