The Weekend Series: five rustic recipes to watch Game of Thrones by

Winter is coming and Game of Thrones is back. After a long hiatus, the record-smashing series returned last week with an emotionally charged Season 8 premiere, in what is set to be the beginning of the end. After nearly a decade of dragons, swords and power struggles, the series will wrap up at the end of this season – meaning every episode is ripe for a GoT viewing party. Keep the chills at bay with these five bone-warming dishes that are easy to share among friends and the perfect accompaniment to your next GoT gathering.

Brothy beans and farro with eggs and mushrooms
“When you play a game of thrones, you win or you die.” Or maybe you just get a nice, warm belly from a hearty bowl of broth. This nourishing dish will make good use of your newfound patience thanks to protracted between-season waits, as you soak and simmer the ingredients to infuse beans and grains with bold strokes of flavour. And to top it all off? Stir a raw egg yolk into each bowl just before serving to ensure silkiness, add bulk and show your mates your iron stomach.

Braised beef stew with garlic cream
A rich beef stew is the ultimate GoT viewing companion, but be sure to pack a bib to avoid spills in the wake of unexpected plot twists and body shudders. This garlic cream sauce takes its cues from Santiago steakhouse Las Cabras and can also be slathered on hunks of crusty bread or fries. This recipe will take about four hours to prepare and serve four to six hungry GoT viewers.

One-skillet rotisserie chicken pot pie
If you’re pressed for time, this perfectly shareable pot pie will take one hour to make and fill six bellies. Take some handy shortcuts by buying both a rotisserie chicken and pre-made puff pastry – just remember to thaw the frozen pastry in the fridge the night before. But of course, as Jon told Arya, sometimes different roads lead to the same castle, so if you’re a stickler for doing things properly, then by all means make them yourself. Whack in some vegies, wine, cream and spices, before sliding it all in the oven for a buttery, flaky, one-pan delight. If you’re a visual learner, check out the video here.

Easy bread and butter pudding
Commander Jeor Mormont might have warned us that the things we love will destroy us every time, but that’s still not stopping us from shoving our faces into this glorious creation. Super quick and easy to make, all that’s required of you is to cut the bread, load it up with sweet condiments, whip up a sugary, creamy concoction to pour on top and pop it in the oven. Twenty-five minutes later you’ll have a hefty dessert that is sure to plug all gaps in your appetite.

Mulled wine
“That’s what I do: I drink and I know things.” Take a leaf out of Tyrion’s book and observe the drama with a glass in your hand. This mulled wine recipe calls for just six ingredients, and bathes oranges, cinnamon sticks, star anise, whole cloves and brown sugar in a bottle of red wine. Perhaps the most rewarding of all night watches, keep an eye on the simmering pot for around 30 minutes before pouring yourself and your viewing companions a cup, and savour the spicy, fruity warmth.
