Glee Coffee Roasters brings the goods north to South Brisbane

Central Coast caffeinators Glee Coffee Roasters have been pioneering specialty coffee down south for a decade, scoring wins with each new location they open. The family-operated organisation has turned its eyes north, opening its first Brisbane venue in South Brisbane this week. Not content with merely opening up a cafe, Glee Coffee's Queensland flagship is a multi-faceted space houses roasting apparatus, wholesale operations and an in-house bakery.

Glee Coffee Roasters started as a family affair. The Queensland-born Gleeson brothers – Ben and Chris – started their coffee empire on the central coast out of a sheer love of the craft. As pioneers of specialty coffee in the region, the brothers were responsible for making a damn-good cup of coffee easy to find and easy to drink, improving accessibility and approachability in the process. After a few years of consistent roasting, the entire coast picked up what the Gleeson brothers were putting down, and soon enough Glee Coffee Roasters opened up an espresso bar in Newcastle and cafes in Erina Heights and Chapman. During this period, the third Gleeson brother Nick and technician Justin Smith came on board, and not long after the team eyed a move north. The group set about searching for a Brisbane space that could act as a base of operations for its Queensland expansion, coming across the perfect space on Glenelg Street in South Brisbane that offered ample room to install not only a cafe, but roasting and office facilities as well. The resulting hub, which opened to the public last Sunday, boasts a bright and airy interior that offers glimpses at the old-school gas roaster and gives insight into the process behind your morning cup.

You have to be very confident in your craft to name your signature bean ‘The Goods’, but Glee Coffee Roasters talk the talk and walk the walk. The blend, which boasts ethically sourced beans from Papua New Guinea, Brazil and Ethiopia, is bolstered by a rotating selection of single origins for its filter pours (a Guatemalan roast is on offer this week, proceeds of which will be donated to the Red Cross). The Glee Coffee kitchen specialises in a home-style food offering, with a menu that is simple but modern. All-day breakfast eats such as salted caramel and honeycomb waffles, house beans with polenta wedges and vegetable stacks are paired with lunch options including tacos and pulled jackfruit burgers. Plenty of vegan and gluten-free bites are available, with grab-and-go salads and sandwiches rounding out the offering. If you like what you taste, Glee Coffee Roasters sells bags of ‘The Goods’ and its single-origin beans, as well as gear for home brewing. Soon, Glee Coffee Roasters will install an on-site bakery for all your pastry needs and, once the space is complete, the team will host barista training sessions and industry nights.

To say hello, Glee Coffee Roasters will be serving free coffee next week, Monday to Friday. Check the Stumble Guide for more information.
