A quick look at Adam Murphy’s CV and you’ll see a theme. From Comfort At My Table and Abode Cafe to Naïm on Melbourne and Wandering Cooks, Adam has done time at a bunch of Brisbane’s wholesome community-focused eateries. It was while working at these haunts that the inspiration for Gramps Cafe first emerged, and when the doors opened on the new Red Hill cafe in late June it marked a long-held dream realised. This sunny spot has been fashioned out of a charming freestanding structure (formerly home to a butcher, day spa and a cafe) and is fittingly reminiscent of your grandparent’s living room – eclectically decorated and seriously comfortable.
Gramps Cafe is designed with the express goal of offering simplistic complexity. Rustic, old-world dishes are constructed using intriguing flavour combinations and seasonal produce, with a substantial range of ingredients made from scratch on premises. Although small, the menu is far from basic, exemplified by the Grampy Eggs, which feature butterbean hummus, nut crumble, spiced pumpkin and pickled fennel, and the old-time omelette is loaded with dill, labneh, and capsicum chilli jam. Savoury vegan and gluten-free dishes are available, while the cafe is slowly implementing sustainable practices regarding packaging. The menu will be constantly rotating, spotlighting modest but memorable eats with home-style heartiness. Single O has been enlisted as the roaster of choice, bolstered by artisan tea from The Steepery Tea Co and Arakai Estate, cold-pressed seasonal juice, smoothies and milkshakes.
