Green is good at West End’s new dedicated vegan cafe Grown

It’s time to flip the script on plant-based cuisine. Yes, we all know the tired tropes attached to vegetarianism and veganism, but let’s be real – it’s 2017 and people can eat what they want. If you are an avowed abstainer of carnivorous eats or are simply seeking to try some inventive new cuisine, make it your priority to check out a schmick new cafe that has bloomed in the heart of West End. Grown does vegan cuisine better than many places do cuisine full stop, so do yourself a favour and get out of your comfort zone. Who knows, maybe plant-based cuisine will ‘grow’ on you.

The rundown
To say Sacha Muchall is well versed in the ins-and-outs of hospitality is an understatement. The hospo veteran – who has worked at spots such as U&I Espresso and Tiller Coffee – has gleaned knowledge through working across various establishments, with each new experience feeding in to his vision for Grown. Grown is a completely plant-based (otherwise known as vegan) eatery that endeavours to support community endeavour, use as much organic and sustainable produce as possible while also minimising waste. Sacha has partnered with the likes of FoodConnect and Suncoast Fresh for a majority of its produce, and also drops off waste down the road at Jane Street Community Garden for composting.

The space
Grown has been hewn into the base of a residential apartment building on Buchanan Street in West End, just a hop, skip and a jump from Davies Park. Studio Lagom was enlisted for the fit-out, creating a vibrant aesthetic utilising an eye-catching palette of materials and strong green tones (green being Sacha’s favourite colour and not just an on-brand choice). An open kitchen offers plenty of foodie theatre for those sitting inside, while outside diners can take in cool breezes and leafy surrounds.

The food and drink
So, you know by now that Grown’s approach to its cuisine is wholesome, but what about the food itself? We can confirm that’s its wholesome as heck, with a menu offering a salivation-inducing selection of bites that will have carnivores considering a culinary switch. Grown’s menu currently offers a concise selection of dishes for breakfast and lunch, made in-house and designed to be sampled tapas-style with a few dishes ordered at a time. All-star dishes include grilled cos lettuce with watercress hummus and black garlic, creamy polenta with French lentils and fried shallots, pan-fried zucchini with caramelised celeriac puree and spicy veggie broth, house made hash browns and brioche French toast with seasonal berries and pepper ice-cream. Sacha has called upon Dramanti Artisan Roasters for its main coffee supplier, but is supplementing the offering with a fortnightly rotation of single origins from local roasters such as Light Coffee Co, Sunday’s Coffee Co, Cleanskin Coffee Co and Parallel Roasters. Also of note – being a vegan cafe, only milk substitutes such as bonsoy, almond and coconut milk are available, with Grown’s own blend to come in the near future. Keep an eye out for a forthcoming dinner service, which will offer some new dishes alongside a curated wine and beer list.
