East Brisbane has long been considered an anomaly amongst the city’s inner suburbs. Most locals cruise through on their commute to The City or Fortitude Valley, or to Bulimba and Morningside in the opposite direction, but recent years have seen some top-notch arrivals boost East Brisbane’s profile, including a heralded specialty coffee nook and a beloved craft-beer brewer. Now there’s an extra excuse to stop for a spell. Hey Joe Coffee Co. – the newest concept from the team behind Perks Kitchen – is a spacious newcomer perched on the corner of Lytton Road and Manilla Street, conceived as a community-focussed dining option that caters to the early rising breakfast and coffee devotees, the leisurely lunch set or the evening dinner crowd. Hey Joe’s interior is bright and spacious, with a light-industrial aesthetic across its coffee counter, bar and 100-capacity seating area (conceptualised and executed by Clui Design and Building in Green) accentuated by exposed brick, high ceilings, pops of living greenery and plush banquette seating. The vision was inspired by the owner’s London upbringing, where much of the city’s architecture favours brick and rustic design touches. Additionally, the desire to bridge day and night with a breakfast-to-dinner offering is also informed by London’s cosmopolitan dining scene, where eateries are more known to offer an all-day service.
Hey Joe Coffee Co.’s menu is similarly influenced by Indian cuisine, with spices incorporated across the brunch, lunch and dinner offering to accelerate flavour and add a new dimension to the familiar. While guests can devour all-day breakfast favourites such as avocado smash, eggs Benedict and pancake stacks, options such as the eggs kerjiwal bhurji (spiced capsicum, chilli-scrambled eggs, tomato onion salsa, house-made spinach flat bread), the crispy cauliflower and corn fritters, or the slow-cooked smashed pumpkin with chilli are tantalising tempters. Coffee is a core component of Hey Joe Coffee Co.’s day-time offering – a custom blend concocted in partnership with a local micro-roaster is readily available alongside pot-brewed organic chai, tea, milkshakes, smoothies and freshly squeezed juices. Also worth noting, Hey Joe is a dog-friendly cafe, with a dedicated menu for pooches including treats and puppycinos. When the sun sets, Hey Joe’s menu flips to dinner, which boasts a selection of sides (chicken wings, charred Mooloolaba king prawns, potato-and-fetta hash cakes), burgers (fried chicken, crispy bacon and Angus beef, and shroom burgers, to name a few), and mains. Of the latter category, stand-out dishes include the marinated saffron-chicken supreme with basmati rizi bizi, charred mushroom and bacon gnocchi, and crispy skin barramundi with fritters and avocado-cumin smash. Hey Joe’s bar is stocked with a bevy of libations too, including a selection of mainstream beers, worldly wines and a collection of cocktails – both classic and Hey Joe interpretations.
