Help communities in need by scoffing ethical chocolate from Hey Tiger

This Melbourne chocolate brand is serving more than just your tastebuds, with each bar sold supporting communities in Ghana.

Not many of us need an excuse to snap off a row (or 10) of the good stuff, but the team at Hey Tiger have racked up so many good reasons that inhaling multiple blocks of their chocolate will actually make a positive impact on the world. Every full-size and mini bar purchased from the social enterprise will help fund female-led community development projects in cocoa-farming communities in Ghana via The Hunger Project. The company is owned by a charitable trust and sources its cocoa from ethical providers, meaning that the farmers responsible have received a fair fee for their cocoa beans. This is a huge step forward in an industry where many farmers are living below the poverty line, and face issues of child trafficking and child labour.

It took an eye injury and subsequent month-long recovery spent lying in a dark room to shake CEO and founder Cyan Ta’eed from her successful tech career and launch her into the world of chocolate making (from which she still refuses to take a salary). Through her own personal research, Cyan was devastated to discover that a product that brought her so much pleasure was so destructive to many farming families in West Africa. So she set about making a change in the industry, while working alongside two expert chocolatiers to dream up out-of-the-box flavour combinations made from fresh ingredients. Hey Tiger launched last year with 22 flavours, while also aiming to release a new limited-edition product every month. Salivate over divine concoctions like peanut butter and jelly, strawberry hazelnut waffle, lychee and mint, whisky and smoke, and birthday cake crumb, among others. The ethical chocolate is handmade in small batches in Melbourne, wrapped up lovingly in quirky packaging and shipped off to drooling mouths across the country. Simply head online to feast your eyes on the Hey Tiger collections and individual bars, and read more about the company’s social impact while you’re deciding.
