Jo-Jo’s is back – and yes, you can still get chips with mushroom sauce

In the weeks following the closure of Jo-Jo’s Restaurant, Queen Street Mall wanderers looked up at the empty corner location and lamented the departure of such an iconic staple. It seemed as if the salt and pepper calamari and grilled king prawns were gone forever, however it wasn’t long before despondence turned into joy as Jo-Jo’s announced it was merely moving to some more fashionable digs across the river. The moment fans of Jo-Jo's mushroom sauce have been waiting for has finally arrived – Jo-Jo’s is back with a new look and a new menu, but with plenty of its signature white marble-adorned charm.

The new-look Jo-Jo’s is smaller than its inner-city iteration, choosing to take a more intimate and consolidated approach to dining without losing any of its signature style. Gone are the multiple kitchens, ordering counters and extremely large menu – now Jo-Jo’s boasts table service, a new-look menu and an improved selection of drinks. Jo-Jo’s shares its ground-level space with The Bach in South Brisbane, Stefan’s furniture and homewares emporium that has also moved from its original Montague Road home, so now patrons are able to eat, drink and shop in one location while enveloped in a Mediterranean-inspired aesthetic that boasts the iconic marble accoutrements fans of Jo-Jo’s love most.

In addition to the change of location, Jo-Jo’s menu has been overhauled considerably in the move, but it’s not without all of the dishes that it built its reputation on. A campaign was undertaken by the Jo-Jo’s team to narrow down Brisbane’s absolute faves that would be carried over to the new menu, which has resulted in plenty of familiar faces for regulars to enjoy. Those dishes that didn’t make the permanent menu will still be showcased as weekly specials, so don’t fret if your go-to has vanished – it will be back! New additions include the likes of D.I.Y. tacos, Lebanese mixed platters, zucchini pasta, crispy skin salmon, and sand crab fettuccine, while a whole new cocktail menu has been done up to complement a few of the original location’s signatures (hibiscus kombucha cocktails, anyone?). A coffee counter serves up espresso to go and a range of cabinet treats and sandwiches, so come morning, noon or night time, Jo-Jo’s will have something for you – just like it has for years.
