Take your tastebuds on a holiday with these five whiskies

If you’re anything like us, you would agree that one of the best things about travelling is all of the new tastes that you encounter – after all, the flavours we experience when we’re away from home can make for some beautiful memories. As one of the strongest spirits, it makes sense that whisky has the power to transport us to places all around the world without even leaving the room – or to take us back to a previous destination with a single sip. The next time you're at Brisbane Airport, we would suggest taking a detour to the JR/Duty Free whisky tasting bar so your tastebuds can go on a little holiday of their own with these five amazing whiskies.

Aberlour Double Cask Matured 12 Year Old
A land as rich, lush and vibrant as Scotland deserves a whisky to match, and the Aberlour 12-year-old double cask is a perfect fit. The Aberlour brand places great emphasis on substance over style, utilising methods and ingredients that have been passed down for generations. The distillery also lies right in the heart of Speyside, the home of some of the finest malt whiskies in the world. The crisp citrus character of the Aberlour spirit is tamed during the double cask maturation process, leaving you with a fine sherried flavour with hints of chocolate that lingers on the palate. Sipping on this beauty will transport you right to the mountainside and is best enjoyed in a castle to complete the vibe – why not book a flight and make this fantasy a reality?

Hellyers Road Original Single Malt 10 Year
It turns out that some of the finest spirits are born and bred in our own backyard? If the crisp air and rolling greenery are calling you, sipping on a Hellyers Road whisky will surely be the extra encouragement you need to hop on a plane. This particular drop has the honour of being Australia’s highest-selling locally crafted single malt and it’s not hard to taste why – premium Tasmanian grain, a non-chilled filtration process and some of the world’s purest water combine to make this a whisky worth celebrating. Top notes of orange and lemon are swiftly joined by a smooth vanilla sweetness that lingers into a creamy aftertaste to take you on a real journey – much like a lazy afternoon spent wandering the halls of MONA.

The Chita – Suntory
From the moment you set your eyes on a bottle of The Chita Suntory Whisky, the bold calligraphy brushstrokes of the branding will clue you in to its origins. This single grain Japanese creation is years in the making, using diverse brewing techniques and master craftsmanship developed at the Chita Distillery in the Aichi Prefecture. The zesty flavours are created using a combination of Sherry, bourbon and (interestingly) wine casks, combining to create a floral finish – perfect for conjuring up images of parks filled with cherry blossoms. We would recommend opening a bottle of The Chita after a day of exploring Harajuku or patting rabbits on Ōkunoshima island.

Starward Wine Cask Single Malt Whisky
Melbourne is known for a lot of things – laneways, coffee and an amazing dining culture just to name a few – but it might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of whisky. This is set to change since the clever team at Starward has managed to bottle the taste of the city with its Wine Cask Whisky. This particular drop gains its unique flavour profile during its maturation process, which uses Australian red wine barrels that have been steamed instead of charred to retain that wine-soaked woodiness. This multiple award-winning whisky walks the line between sweet and savoury, leaving the palate with a long tannic finish.

Teeling Single Malt Whiskey
Feeling lucky? If not, you will be after you sample some of Teeling’s delectable single malt whiskey. Made in the heart of Dublin city centre (where we would definitely recommend visiting if you get the chance), the renegades at the Teeling distillery have instilled the spirit of Ireland into this truly flavoursome statement drop. Using innovative mash bills, fermentation and distilling techniques, the crew at Teeling have been able to create a whiskey that is non-age statement but still retains a distinct Irish smoothness. Take in flavours of dry fruits, citrus, vanilla, spice and cloves with a long and sweet finish – all that’s missing is the sound of a pan-flute in the background.

Itching to take your tastebuds on a holiday? All of these whiskies from JR/Duty Free are available to try for free – next time you’re at the airport, head to JR/Duty Free and make a beeline for the whisky bar (and look out for the handy ‘exclusive’ tags). This post was created in conjunction with our friends at Brisbane Airport.
