All grown up – Lady Marmalade shows off its sophisticated new look

She's got style, she's got grace, she's a winner. She's a lady! Whoa whoa whoa, she's a lady! That’s right – Stones Corner’s favourite corner cafe has undergone a significant makeover. For the past two and a half years, Lady Marmalade’s owners Sonja and Howard Searle have been feeding and watering locals of the inner south, and recently seized the opportunity to enhance their cafe’s offering tremendously. Lady Marmalade has reopened to the public with a fantastic new menu and a gorgeous fit-out that retains all of the heart, class and soul that has made it a beloved spot for locals.

For those unfamiliar with the cherished coffee haunt, Lady Marmalade has operated since 2010 from within a characterful building that over the years has housed The National Bank, Ray’s Canary House and Bird Hospital and Replay Records and CDs. Renovations were already on the cards for Sonja and Howard when they took over, but the couple chose to get to know the locals and building before making any drastic changes. The perfect opportunity arrived when the next-door tenancy became available, so Sonja and Howard seized the opportunity to spread their wings and enhance Lady Marmalade’s offering without sacrificing charm. Lady Marmalade’s rejuvenation has brought the original brick walls to the fore, increased its indoor seating capacity from eight seats to more than 60, converted its original space into The Birdcage (as an homage to its aviary heritage), while adding a spacious new portion to the cafe lovingly nicknamed Magnolia (as a tribute to the saucy song we’re all familiar with and because of the gorgeous mural on the feature wall). A new coffee and bar counter has been installed in the Magnolia room, while full kitchen has been installed as well, giving new chef Sam Axton (ex-Au Cirque) the chance to flex his culinary muscles with a brand new menu.

Lady Marmalade’s new menu encompasses scrumptious morsels including organic breads baked in house, light snacks, all-day breakfast dishes and a dedicated lunch selection. Menu standouts include The LM Gringo, boasting a chilli cheese cornbread waffle tapped with savoury mince, chorizo, black beans, fontina cheese, sour cream and fried eggs, the roasted butternut pumpkin and three-cheese tarte tatin, raisin pain au lait French toast with sea salt and nut brown butter ice-cream, haloumi, zucchini and pea cakes, and Berkshire pork chops. Lady Marmalade is now licensed, with a stellar range of craft beers curated by Matt Kirkegaard featuring the likes of Feral Brewing Company, Balter Brewing, Fixation Brewing Co and Hawkers, as well as boutique wines and a few cheeky cocktails (the Lady cocktail comes with marmalade mixed in). Sonja and Howard are looking at opening Lady Marmalade for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights in the coming months, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more information.
