Margo Restaurant and Bar brings a worldly spin to Paddington’s fine-dining scene

After Paddington mainstay Montrachet closed its doors in anticipation of a move to King Street, the hot topic on everyone’s lips was who would step up and fill the vacant Paddington destination. Americo Fernandes has taken on the challenge, recently opening up Margo Restaurant and Bar in the rustic restaurant space. If you salivate at the sound of a light fusion of European and Asian cuisine, then grab some napkins, mar-go ahead and read on.

There was never any chance of Montrachet’s former home staying empty for long. A gorgeous space like that? Are you kidding us? The lights had only been turned off for a short period when new ownership got to work, and when we heard word that Margo Restaurant and Bar was set to open we were immediately giddy. Executive chef Americo Fernandes, whose pedigree includes stints at Urbane, Bacchus and Malt Dining, fronts the culinary establishment, and looks to bring a wider range of tastes to the space that was home to some of Brisbane’s finest French flavours. The space still boasts the iconic red seats and gorgeous marble-topped bar, but look for the Margo team to infuse a bit more colour into the décor as they settle in.

As for the food, fans of Montrachet’s rich morsels will still find plenty to love. Americo has returned to the French techniques of his early career and paired them with touches of inspiration from the world at large and the freshest seasonal ingredients available. Calling it a ‘light fusion’, Americo is keeping things humble and making Montrachet fans and newcomers feel comfortable with a menu of entrees, mains and desserts that cater for a variety of dietary needs. Margo plates up dishes with influences from Asia (the duo of scallops with curry, asparagus, corn and basil), the Mediterranean (lamb rack provençal with smoked babaganoush and garlic), Argentina (chimichurri cauliflower steak with smoked leek and macadamia) and Americo’s home of Portugal (Moreton Bay bugs with piperade and chorizo). If you’re heartbroken at the possibility of no longer being able to get steak frites here, dry your tears – the iconic dish has remained. In addition to these meals, Margo also serves up a selection of ecstasy-inducing desserts and a curated selection of wines and cocktails to match the fare.

Margo is now open and ready to satisfy your tastebuds. For opening hours and contact details, click over to the Stumble Guide.
