Tease your tastebuds at Monty’s Bakehouse in West End

There's something completely intoxicating about the aroma of freshly baked bread. Your nose tingles as you inhale that warm familiar scent, your mouth watering at the thought of the carby goodness that awaits your tastebuds. Let's be real, it's pretty hard to concentrate on anything else once a baked good grabs your attention. Just a word of warning – this exact sensation is going to hit you the moment you step inside Monty's Bakehouse, and you're probably going to want to buy everything that lies before you in the cabinet. Look, we get it. No judgement here.

Monty’s Bakehouse has just opened its doors in West End, taking over the Beesley Street corner beneath the Light + Co. apartments on Montague Road. While the name implies that baking is a specialty at Monty’s – and don’t get us wrong, it most certainly is – it’s much more than simply a bakery. If you manage to bypass the counter without devouring every baked good in sight, you’ll notice a fully stocked bar, Newstead Brewing Co. beer taps and a breezy alfresco dining area offering a delectable selection of breakfast and lunch options, with dinner set for Friday and Saturday nights in the coming weeks.

Hospitality veteran David Carter is the man behind Monty’s Bakehouse, who has sated our appetites for many years with chef brother Peter at Graceville’s Boucher French Bistro and previously South Bank’s iconic now-closed River Canteen. David has enlisted the incredibly skilled hands of head baker Charissa Fraser and head pastry chef Susie Unwin (both ex-Jocelyn’s Provisions) to create the plethora of baked goods that draws you into Monty’s. Each day Charissa and Susie whip up everything from artisan breads such as rye and miso loaves, five-seed baguettes and classic crunchy sourdough, to decadent sweet treats including dulce de leche brownie cookies, gingerbread cupcakes with salted caramel and cream cheese icing, rose and pistachio meringue cookies and a number of delightful gluten-free options.

If you care for something a little more substantial, Monty’s breakfast and lunch menus have you covered. Start your day with the likes of house-cured Tasmanian salmon with lemon, dill, creme fraiche, grilled asparagus, mushroom duxelles and vanilla-shallot vinaigrette on house-baked sourdough, mixed berries with lemon-vanilla mascarpone, while chocolate and maple syrup on house French-toasted brioche, or the simple pleasure of house-made jam on a freshly baked warm croissant. Lunchtime welcomes a selection of comforting sandwiches, burgers, light meals, salads and share plates – think slow-roasted rosemary lamb, grain mustard, cornichons and greens on sourdough, and roasted sweet potato, pumpkin, pearl couscous, roasted eggplant, mint and fetta salad. You can pair your meal with a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, or Monty’s own house-blend coffee, which is roasted just metres away on Montague Road.

If you’re ready to get baked, head to our Stumble Guide for Monty’s opening hours and contact details.

The Stumble Guide is our comprehensive Brisbane dining guide with more than 2400 places to eat, drink, shop and play.
