Doo-Bop Jazz Bar Burger Project The Single Guys CBD The Cheese Pleaser Legends Speakeasy Bar

The round-up: Brisbane City’s influx of new openings

We don’t know if you’ve noticed, but there has been a lot of activity taking place in The City of late. We’re not talking about the hustle and bustle of the daily commute or the feverish hordes of shoppers hitting the big retailers, we’re talking about food and drink. In the past month alone, Brisbane City has welcomed a huge influx of bars, restaurants and cafes into its midst, proving that the inner-city is still at the forefront of Brisbane’s top-notch dining scene. If you’ve been meaning to check out what’s fresh (and openings still to come), we’ve assembled a handy guide to make your food crawl easier.

Open now
The Single Guys: Should you be getting started on your inner-city exploration early, book yourself in for a visit to The Single Guys on Charlotte Street. With a sterling reputation forged at its iconic Kenmore location, The Single Guys team has brought its boutique coffee offering and curated selection of breakfast bites to its sleek central location. Were we to recommend something to try, we’d suggest sampling the fried eggs with sobrassada and gorgonzola on toasted rye – you can’t go wrong.

The Cheese Pleaser: If you’ve got a soft spot for gourmet cheese (don’t we all?), then stopping by The Cheese Pleaser on Adelaide Street will surely put a smile on your face. Fill up a hamper with imported and local cheeses and smallgoods, grab a cup of Single O coffee, or simply order a three-cheese with jamon and onion jam toastie to go and enjoy the brie-induced bliss you deserve.

4Fingers Crispy Chicken: This Albert Street joint whips up a huge range of golden morsels, from wings and drumettes to burgers, rice boxes with kimchi coleslaw, chicken chops with fries and chicken katsu sandwiches. But this isn’t your regular fast-food joint – 4Fingers prides itself on its commitment to serving up free-range and sustainably sourced ingredients, and even ferments its kimchi coleslaw in house daily. If you’ve got a craving for finger-lickin’ chicken, make tracks for 4Fingers.

Burger Project: Neil Perry’s Burger Project on Edward Street is much more than just your typical burger joint – it blends slow-food values with fast-food service to create a midpoint that balances quality and consistency. Each burger is made from freshly ground Cape Grim beef patties, free-range Lilydale chicken or crumbed confit mushroom. Add some fries, house-brewed soda or a craft beer to go with it and you’ve got a bona fide winner of a lunch on your hands.

The Silver Fox Wine Bar: Down near the City Botanic Gardens is a chic and sophisticated drinking nook perfect for sating cravings for a top-notch wine or sublime cocktail. The Silver Fox Wine bar has a range of Australian and international drops to savour, as well as cheese and charcuterie platters piled high with all the morsels you want in your mouth immediately.

Bar OTTO: It didn’t take long for fine-dining institution OTTO Brisbane to establish itself as one of Brisbane’s best eating destinations after opening on Queen Street in 2016, but the new addition of Bar OTTO solidifies the venue as a dynamic nightspot. A great place to start the night or finish it, this aperitivo bar offers a sublime cocktail and wine selection, as well as a range of Italian-inspired small plates to nibble on all night.

Legends Speakeasy Bar: Thankfully we are nearly a century removed from the prohibition era, but the aesthetic appeal of secret speakeasies is timeless. Legends Speakeasy Bar takes the ‘hidden’ premise to new levels, with the location kept secret from the general populace. If you do manage to stumble across this hidden haunt, you best have the secret passcode handy. Once you emerge into the steampunk-inspired surrounds of the bar, treat yourself to cocktails and tapas.

Doo-Bop Jazz Bar: One of the newest faces on the bar scene is a haunt that aims to bring the late-night party culture of American jazz bars to Brisbane City. Doo-Bop Jazz Bar is a two-level venue, boasting a piano bar and restaurant on top, and a swinging subterranean jazz bar below. Dine on a sumptuous selection of fine-dining dishes such as slow-roasted pork belly, confit duck leg and barbecued quail, before heading downstairs to catch some live music every night of the week. If that wasn’t enough to get your toes tapping with excitement, Doo-Bop Jazz Bar stays open until 3:00 am every day with a menu of Cajun- and Creole-inspired bites available until close.

Opening Soon
The Cloakroom Bar: Any dapper dude will tell you that The Cloakroom on Elizabeth Street is the best place to go for an impeccably tailored suit, but pretty soon the establishment will be known for delectable cocktails as well. The Cloakroom Bar will be a 35-seater taking shape in the form of a lounge-style bar, where bespoke beverages will be made especially for you. Expect this haunt to open to the public in the coming weeks.

Chester Street Bakery: If you haven’t had the divine pleasure of devouring a cake from Chester Street’s Newstead location, you simply haven’t lived. From the dessert mastermind Damian Griffiths (Doughnut Time, Mister Fitz’s Finest Ice Cream), Chester Street will offer a grab-and-go selection of sweets, specialty cakes, coffee and more. Sharpen your sweet tooth, this one will be arriving soon.
