A Coorparoo institution reborn as modern cafe Ninebar + Kitchen

When Daniel Bellas closed Belesis Cafe Restaurant on Old Cleveland Road after a solid innings of 19 years of trade, he left a considerable hole in the local food scene. Stepping in to fill the void is none other than Daniel's son Mark and his partner Sam, who have rejuvenated the space and transformed it into Ninebar + Kitchen. Mark and Sam are delivering a contemporary take on cafe dining, with a modern menu and inviting aesthetic setting up the venue for many more years of top-notch trade.

Mark Bellas has grown up around and made a career out of food. He’s worked in front of and behind the scenes in various guises, from waiter and kitchen staff at his father’s restaurant to successful fruit and vegetable wholesaler with a clientele portfolio boasting many of Brisbane’s best food institutions. If you voted who would be most likely to succeed as a cafe operator, Mark’s experience alone would be enough to secure the nod. Lucky for Coorparoo locals, Mark and his partner Sam chose the area to open their first cafe Ninebar + Kitchen, a bright, airy and welcoming eatery located on Old Cleveland Road. The location might be familiar to some – yes, Mark has taken over the space that once housed his father’s restaurant Belesis – but Mark and Sam are their own operators, and Ninebar is a whole new entity inspired and built upon their personal inspirations and ideas. The space has been completely redone with the help of interior designers Peddle + Potter, with new flooring, bifold doors along the facade, white rendered walls, an exterior deck and eye-catching bar giving the space a bright Santorini-like crispness. One thing that hasn’t changed is the eatery’s core values – personable service, a comfortable atmosphere and good food made from quality ingredients are the foundational hospitality tenets that Mark and Sam live by.

Ninebar + Kitchen’s menu is stacked with familiar breakfast and lunch bites with a signature Ninebar slant. Custard-dipped orange mascarpone French toast, gooey croque madames, savoury waffle eggs benny and ricotta-and-blueberry pancakes are some morning winners, while caffeine seekers are also amply catered for with pours of Fonzie Abbott coffee. The afternoon service starts with small plates and snacks including baked camembert, salt-and-pepper calamari, and a board of King Island cheeses and accompaniments, before transitioning to its full lunch offering. Here, the kitchen pumps out the likes of harissa-spiced chicken salad, Vietnamese noodle salad, fettuccine carbonara, steak sandwiches, and Danny’s chicken pesto linguine – a Belesis signature and tribute to Mark’s father. Ninebar + Kitchen is fully licensed, with a selection of mainstream beer and cider, a seasonal wine list and a clutch of classic cocktails available alongside decadent shakes and fruit-packed smoothies.
