For the past few years, those seeking a taste of Italy have satiated their craving at Mister Paganini. Seeking to capitalise on the foot traffic of Grey Street and attract the morning crowd, the team behind the eatery has decided to split the tenancy in two, transforming the Grey Street end into Nonna’s Deli – an accessible pit stop for anyone seeking a morning pick-me-up and an Italian-style breakfast morsel to go. The concept is simple – Nonna’s Deli builds upon Mister Paganini’s ethos of fresh and simple ingredients utilised well, offering a range of items made in house that encompasses a takeaway section and cooked breakfasts to sit down and enjoy. Patrons will be able to order at the takeaway counter if they are in a hurry, or they can leisurely recline in shaded seclusion off Grey Street.
Now, on to the good stuff – and there’s a lot of it. Nonna’s Deli isn’t your prototypical European deli – you won’t be able to grab groceries while you are here. The takeaway offering is reminiscent of authentic Italian street food, with a display fridge filled with the likes of fresh sandwiches stuffed with gourmet ingredients, authentic paninis and focaccias, hand-folded almond croissants and delectable tarts. One must-try specialty is the piadina – what can be best described as an Italian quesadilla – filled and pressed to perfection. A menu of conventional breakfast classics will also be available to enjoy if you have time to spare. Caffeine junkies will be pleased to know that coffee is also a key aspect of the Nonna’s Deli repertoire. Campos is the roaster of choice, with Nonna’s Deli being the only locale in the South Bank area to stock the acclaimed beans. Speaking of exclusivity, Nonna’s Deli is also one of the very first coffee spots to offer macadamia milk, which has been sourced from Byron Bay. Smoothies, vegan-friendly milkshakes, faux espresso martinis and cold-press juices are also made in house, while patrons can also opt for tea, honey-soaked chai or turmeric lattes if they so choose.
