Pavement Whispers: Volume 220 April 30

From whispers of Teneriffe's new ethical and sustainable cafe to brand-new burger arrivals, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Milky Lane
Brisbane’s stacked burger scene is about to welcome a fresh-faced newcomer, with the juicy news that Milky Lane has commenced the build of its first Brisbane location. The uber-cool burger, dessert and cocktail joint boasts five locations across New South Wales and one in Surfers Paradise, but the forthcoming Brisbane location is set to be its most impressive yet. Taking pride of place within a brand-new hospitality strip at Gasworks Plaza, Milky Lane’s 300-sqm space will be one of five new retailers slated to open at the Newstead hub. The ground-up build is underway, with the 200-seat venue to feature indoor and outdoor dining spaces adorned in eye-catching murals from local street artist Sofles. Milky Lane’s menu is constantly changing, but diners can expect around nine burger varieties (including vegan-friendly burgs), decadent desserts, ten heavenly cocktails and more. Like its sibling venues, Milky Lane DJs will be spinning hip-hop tunes every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from a custom-built DJ booth. Milky Lane is expected to open in late June. Stay tuned for more details!

Barko & Co
Sustainability and ethically minded operation is something that is quickly becoming more pertinent for numerous industries, but none more so than the food industry. From proper waste management to support for local producers, socially conscious hospitality is more than a trend – it’s becoming a necessity for operators and consumers alike. A brand-new cafe set to open on Macquarie Street in Teneriffe will champion the cause with a health-conscious offering made following a strict sustainable ethos. Barko & Co is the brainchild of Raex Murillo and his family, a group of savvy socially aware foodies that have been dabbling in the environmentally sustainable realm for some time (Raex’s sister Vanessa is one of the minds behind local mission-led social enterprise I am Grounded and its brand-new Coffee Fruit Bar). Barko & Co will be a must-try destination for anyone seeking a nourishing take on Australian cafe staples. Coffee will be provided by the Murillo family’s own coffee-import business Mr Coffee’s, which sources beans directly from farmers working micro-lots in Colombia and Panama. The cafe will officially open to the public on Tuesday May 7 – we’ll have a closer look for you next week!

Veuve Clicquot Chalet
We’re two months into autumn and, frankly, we’re still waiting for the cooler temperatures to really arrive. Thankfully a cold front is set to blast Customs House when the Veuve Cliquot Chalet arrives on Friday May 10. Taking shape as an Aspen-style winter paradise, the pop-up winter party spot will be setting up Igloo chalets on Customs House’s riverside terrace, giving attendees a cosy view of the Story Bridge and beyond. An on-site bar will be the spot to get a fix of some fancy cocktails, while a food menu offers up a selection of cold-weather bites, including ocean-trout toasties with creme fraiche and fennel marmalade, citrus-poached Moreton Bay bug croissants with lime mayo, and baked brie with thyme and crostini. Come July, Customs House will be the spot to celebrate mid-year Christmas as Veuve hosts its own Clicq-mas celebration all month long (more details on that later). The Veuve Clicquot Chalet will run from Friday May 10 to Thursday July 4, opening Thursday through to Saturday from 4:00 pm and on Sundays from 12:00 pm.
