Pavement Whispers: Volume 185 August 14

From whispers of Brisbane's new absolute-riverfront bar to a bayside food festival, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Q
As of end of service on Sunday August 26, River Quay’s Stoke Bar will be closing its doors for good. There is no need to commiserate, however – the closure is to facilitate a million-dollar transformation of the space, resulting in the creation of Stokehouse Q’s new neighbouring bar, Q. The redesign will further capitalise on the bar’s absolute-riverfront location, extending the boardwalk experience with increased wrap-around lounge seating, booths, intimate spaces and a private lounge. Executive chef Richard Ousby has crafted an all-new menu for Q, split into hand and fork options, including the likes of salted cod fritters with sheeps milk yoghurt, mozzarella and bolognaise jaffles, and pork cotoletta with fennel and caper slaw. Cocktail connoisseur Becki Parker has come on board as master mixologist, concocting a ‘Library of Libations’ showcasing quintessential Queensland flavours. Stokehouse Q will also temporarily close on Sunday August 26 to make way for new kitchen and restaurant upgrades, with both venues reopening in early September.

Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival
Mark your calendars for a weekend of eating on September 8–9, when Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival makes its delicious debut. The inaugural festival will spread along the Redcliffe Foreshore with the sparkling Moreton Bay as its backdrop, celebrating the bounty of local produce that abounds the region. The two jam-packed days will see the foreshore transformed into a foodie wonderland of free events, with pop-up bars, a seafood and wine deck, a dog cafe, Food Truck Alley, a dessert festival, cooking demonstrations (including from River Cottage Australia’s Paul West) and more. Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival will also host a number of special ticketed events and workshops across the weekend, including a day trip to Moreton Island for a beach barbecue, a four-course seafood feast and a sunset cruise complete with food, drinks, live music and the best view of the fireworks over the bay. Head to our Event Guide for full details and ticketing information.

Fritzenberger Frites and Burger Brew House
Burger-joint-meets-micro-brewery Fritzenberger is expanding, with a second location set to open in September this year. Fritzenberger Frites and Burger Brew House is currently underway in a northern Brisbane suburb, with the exact location yet to be revealed. Much like its Caxton Street sibling, the Frites and Burger Brew House will pour eight Fritzen beers on tap, delivered daily from the Petrie Terrace in-house micro-brewery, alongside its menu of classic burgers and sides. The new location will also mean the introduction of new suburbs to Fritzenberger’s UberEATS reach, for those days when you couldn’t possibly leave the house. We’ll have more details in the coming weeks.

What’s open Ekka Wednesday
Dagwood dogs and strawberry sundaes not quite your style? Don’t fret. There are plenty of places staying open for your mid-week Ekka public holiday tomorrow, Wednesday August 15. Whether you need an early-morning coffee, late lunch or evening feast, we’ve found all of the places ready and waiting to feed and water you around town.
