Pavement Whispers: Volume 136 August 22

From whispers of Brisbane's first burger festival to regional food excursions, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Burgerfest
This. Is. Not. A. Drill. Brisbane is about to get its very first burger festival! Roll out your favourite pair of elastic-band pants, because on Saturday October 21, the living legends at Stone & Wood and The Triffid will be shutting down Stratton Street in Newstead to dedicate an entire day to the best buns in Brisbane with Burgerfest. We’re not exaggerating when we say it’s Brisbane’s best – the line-up is as legitimate as it gets. Ben’s BurgersZe PickleMiss Kay’sRed HookLucky EggMr Burger5 Boroughs and The Triffid will all be hitting the grills, each serving up their most-loved classics alongside an exclusive Burgerfest burg. You might want to skip breakfast for this one, especially if you want to enter the burger-eating competition. Burgerfest is a free event and there’s not just burgers – you’ll find street games, prizes to be won and live music all day in The Triffid Beer Garden. Plus, just when you thought this day couldn’t get any better, as the sun sets Bernard Fanning will be bringing his fourth and final sold-out show of his Brutal Dawn tour to The Triffid’s stage. We’ll have more details on what will be between the Burgerfest buns in the lead up to the festival, but for now head to our Event Guide for more info.

The Jetty South Bank
Change is in the air for The Coats Group’s The Jetty South Bank. The River Quay restaurant is set to close its doors late this week for a huge revamp, reopening in early September with a new design, new bar and new menu. The plan is to split the venue into distinct bar and restaurant spaces, seating 40 and 80 patrons respectively. Highly regarded chef Rhett Willis will be at the kitchen’s helm, with the new menu set to feature the likes of fresh wasabi leaves with Hawaiian-style salmon, black rice, nori, sesame and avocado, and kangaroo with black-pepper crust and ginger carrot puree. Mornings will also be spotlighted when The Jetty reopens – the riverside restaurant will be the only River Quay spot serving up coffee from 7:00 am every day alongside a selection of pastries.

Wild Canary on the Road
Brookfield’s Wild Canary is hitting the road this weekend, hosting its first immersive regional food experience in the Lockyer Valley. This Saturday August 26, Wild Canary on the Road will see guests have the choice of joining in for a full day of foodie fun, or lunch only, to experience some of the most incredible produce our state has to offer. The tour kicks off at 9:00 am with morning tea at 9Dorf Farm in Lilydale, followed by a tour of the fourth-generation farm, which is well known for its regenerative and ethical practices. A four-course lunch will take place at the historic Grantham Butter Factory, showcasing the local produce and farmers of the region, with the day ending in a mini producers market so you can take the spoils of the Lockyer Valley home with you. Limited tickets are still available – head to our Event Guide for full details.
